BASF's Automotive Plastics Wins Land as Sector-Wide Tech Selloff Bites
Published on 11/08/2026 at 04:23 | Editorial boerse-global.deBASF picked up a pair of SPE Automotive Innovation honours this week for plastic components developed with carmaking partners, though the recognition did nothing to shield the chemicals group's stock from a broad market downdraft. The shares shed 2.9% on Friday as a global retreat from AI and semiconductor names rippled through German equities, with no link established between the decline and the award announcements.
The Ludwigshafen-based company, working alongside Stellantis and L&L Products, took the SPE Automotive Innovation Award in the Chassis/Hardware category for a composite tunnel reinforcement used in the 2027 model-year Jeep Grand Cherokee. A second project earned the top prize: BASF, Toyota and Vuteq claimed the SPE Automotive Innovation Grand Award for the thermoplastic truck bed of the 2026 Toyota Tacoma, an application that also won in the Body Exterior category.
A third accolade went to BASF with Ford and Supavut Thailand in the Materials category, recognising door-handle trim on the 2026 Ford Everest. Together the three projects span different partners and vehicle applications, underscoring the group's reach across automotive supply chains.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BASF?
The stock weakness had little to do with any of that. According to the Tagesschau, the worldwide selloff in AI and chip stocks weighed on the German market as a whole, and BASF was among the weakest performers in European chemicals during morning trading, dpa-AFX reported. Worries about the future momentum of AI investment drove selling pressure across sectors rather than any fresh operating news from BASF itself.
Guidance Raised on Stronger Third Quarter
On the operating front, the picture is brighter. Roughly two weeks ago the group lifted its full-year 2026 forecast, now projecting EBITDA before special items of EUR 7.4bn to EUR 7.8bn, up from a previous range of EUR 6.9bn to EUR 7.7bn.
Third-quarter figures released on 28 October showed sales climbing 14% year on year to EUR 16.4bn, while EBITDA before special items rose 15% to EUR 1.6bn.
Beyond automotive and core chemicals, BASF has been rolling out new applications. On 30 October its trinamiX subsidiary and Eurofins Agro Testing unveiled a joint approach to mobile feed analysis for EuroTier 2026, combining NIR spectroscopy with calibration models. A day earlier, the company introduced Lincare, a naturally derived active ingredient intended for skincare following laser treatments.
