Barclays Floats Tesla-SpaceX Merger as SpaceX Preps Q3 Report
Published on 10/19/2026 at 14:33 | Editorial boerse-global.deBarclays analysts suggested last Thursday that a combination of Tesla and SpaceX could become a topic as early as this fall or early November, citing artificial intelligence integration as the main driver behind such a move.
The speculation lands at an awkward moment for SpaceX, which is due to report third-quarter 2026 results tomorrow and holds an investor webcast at 4:30 p.m. ET. The stock closed Friday's European session at 129.96 euros and is 33 percent below its 52-week high. Friday alone brought a 1.9 percent decline, extending the weekly loss to 11 percent.
A $40 Billion Chip Financing Takes Shape
Media reports indicate SpaceX is seeking $40 billion in external financing to purchase Nvidia semiconductors. The structure comprises roughly $30 billion in investment-grade-rated bonds and $10 billion in bank loans led by Apollo Global Management, with Reuters reporting about $10 billion in bank credit and some $30 billion in investment-grade paper. Those talks do not yet constitute a completed agreement.
The strategic direction is clear: SpaceX intends to build substantial computing capacity. Whether that necessitates a legal merger with the electric vehicle maker is another question. Tesla is grappling with margin pressure in its core business and shifting dynamics in the global auto market. SpaceX, by contrast, dominates commercial spaceflight with its Falcon rockets and is expanding Starlink into a worldwide satellite network. Combining the two would create a complex conglomerate of fundamentally different business models — a structure capital markets rarely reward with a premium.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SpaceX?
Spectrum, Starship and a Packed Launch Manifest
SpaceX has plenty of operational work on its own plate. Roughly two weeks ago it agreed to acquire the nationwide 800-MHz spectrum portfolio from Grain Management, covering up to 14 MHz of paired spectrum, to advance direct satellite-to-mobile connections. Reuters pegged the cash deal at around $8 billion, and it still requires FCC approval. Following the announcement, Pivotal Research analyst Jeffrey Wlodarczak raised his price target to $230 from $220 while keeping a Buy rating.
The launch cadence has been relentless. On Friday a Falcon rocket lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base carrying the classified USSF-481 mission for the U.S. Space Force. Before that, SpaceX flew the CRS-35 cargo mission, delivering 2,860 kilograms of supplies to the International Space Station aboard a Dragon freighter. Ship 40 also returned to Starbase — the first Starship upper stage to come back to its launch site after a spaceflight for technical inspection and analysis.
Meanwhile, SpaceX has applied to the FAA for a significant increase in launch frequency at Starbase, potentially up to 456 launches per year. Geopolitical friction over military use of satellite connections in Ukraine has added further noise, with speed restrictions causing unease.
What the Quarter Must Deliver
Evercore ISI raised its price target on the stock just days ago, yet hard operational returns must ultimately justify the heavy spending. The market's skepticism has shown up in the share price, signaling that investors are no longer waving through the capital requirements for AI hardware and ambitious space projects without scrutiny.
When the Q3 figures arrive, attention should center on Starlink's actual cash generation and the outlook for the space business. Loading a megamerger with Tesla onto this operational high phase risks a costly loss of focus. Investors have valued SpaceX above all as a technological pace-setter in orbit — not as a holding company for diversified AI experiments. That distinction is the real story, and it will be settled in Texas and in orbit, not at the negotiating table of a corporate wedding.
