Ballard Power Wants to Turn Hydrogen Power Into a Business — and It Has a Borrowing Plan to Match
Published on 11/02/2026 at 00:40 | Editorial boerse-global.deBallard Power has put a number on its ambition. The fuel-cell maker plans to spend between $80 million and $120 million building out its hydrogen power unit (HPU) fleet, and it intends to fund that outlay largely with debt: a secured financing carrying a loan-to-value ratio above 80%, a structure management presented at the Ballard Forum on October 22.
The borrowing plan is the piece that ties the whole strategy together. A fleet of this size is not just a product line — it is capital tied up in hardware that has to earn its keep. Ballard's answer is to lean on secured lending rather than its own balance sheet, though the company was careful to note that the pace of investment is optional. In other words, the spending plan is a ceiling, not a commitment carved in stone.
Growth Targets Come With a Margin Attached
At the same forum, Ballard laid out what it expects that capital to produce. Revenue is targeted to grow at a compound annual rate of 30% over the next two fiscal years. Gross margin is meant to clear 20% in 2027 and exceed 25% in 2028. On an adjusted EBITDA basis, the company aims to turn positive by the end of 2027 and to stay positive across the whole of 2028.
Those are targets, not reported results — a distinction that matters for anyone weighing the stock. A positive adjusted EBITDA figure would not, on its own, translate into a net profit. What the goals do show is that Ballard is not chasing volume for its own sake: the plan pairs rising sales with a larger share of those sales retained at the gross level.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ballard Power?
The Technology Is Already on the Ground
The commercial case rests on deployments that have already happened. On October 21, Ballard and its subsidiary GeoPura detailed hydrogen power deployments across concerts, festivals and golf events during 2026. GeoPura's HPU2 systems powered the Boomtown Festival, the Edinburgh Summer Sessions and the Solheim Cup in the Netherlands.
That roster is more than a marketing list. It points to a business model built around organized hydrogen power supply, with the two companies stating their intent to expand that offering across North America and Europe. The HPU Agile-H fits the same blueprint: GeoPura developed the transportable unit, Siemens Energy handles manufacturing, and Ballard supplies the fuel-cell technology. Pre-orders are open, with deliveries slated for the first quarter of 2027.
From Demonstration to Durable Business
A product announcement, a live deployment and a sustainably profitable operation are three different stages of the same journey, and Ballard has so far delivered on the first two. The financing structure it has sketched out is likewise an expectation rather than evidence of completed transactions — a high loan-to-value secured facility still has to be arranged.
Ballard Power at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
That is why the next hard datapoint matters more than any headline. Ballard has scheduled its third-quarter 2026 earnings call for November 16, 2026, at 8 a.m. Pacific time. It is the first fixed opportunity to measure the 30% growth target, the margin path and the fleet build against actual numbers.
The shares slipped 3.1% on Friday. A single session's move says nothing about whether hydrogen power can be sold at a profit, and it should not be read as a verdict on individual products or on the company's goals. The real test is whether Ballard can bring growth, margins and capital requirements together — and the November 16 call is where that test begins.
