AXT Draws Institutional Heavyweights Even as Shares Give Back Gains From a Parabolic Run

The semiconductor supply chain has a way of producing unlikely bottlenecks, and right now indium phosphide is front and center. AXT, a specialist supplier of the compound semiconductor substrates used in optical components for data centers, finds itself at the intersection of a raw-material shortage and an artificial intelligence spending boom that shows no signs of cooling. Yet the stock's behavior on Friday tells a more complicated story: shares slipped 7.1% to €53.52, a pullback that follows a staggering 320% gain since the start of the year.
The tension between the company's fundamental tailwinds and its volatile trading pattern has created an opening for large institutional investors. BlackRock disclosed a 7.75% stake in AXT after acquiring 3,533,591 shares during the second quarter, a purchase valued at roughly $254.7 million. That positions the world's largest asset manager alongside a growing list of funds — including GSA Capital Partners, E Fund Management, and Polymer Capital Management — that have recently initiated or expanded positions in the semiconductor supplier.
A Supply Squeeze With Pricing Power
The catalyst drawing all this attention is a tightening market for indium phosphide wafers. Industry data published August 17 from Taipei points to the most severe shortage of the material since records began, with wafer prices expected to climb more than 10% in the fourth quarter. Indium phosphide is a critical building block for the optical interconnects that move data at high speeds within AI-driven data centers, and the combination of surging demand and constrained supply gives AXT meaningful pricing leverage.
Management had already flagged improving conditions when it reported second-quarter results roughly a month ago, describing a turning point in demand for optical connectivity products. The numbers back that up: revenue jumped to $47.59 million from $17.97 million in the year-ago period. For the current quarter, the company guided to approximately $66 million in sales and adjusted earnings per share between $0.30 and $0.32.

Leveraged ETFs and Analyst Upgrades Add Fuel
The market's growing conviction in AXT's story is also reflected in the product pipeline. Tradr ETFs announced on August 18 that it plans to launch leveraged single-stock exchange-traded funds on AXT, offering both 2x long and 2x short exposure. Such instruments typically emerge when trading activity and divergent opinions among market participants reach elevated levels.
Sell-side sentiment has shifted accordingly. Needham upgraded the stock from "Hold" to "Buy" on August 17, setting a price target of $90. Zacks Research moved its rating from "Hold" to "Strong Buy" roughly two weeks earlier. Weiss Ratings offered a more tempered view, lifting its assessment from "d-" to "d+" while remaining in sell territory. The consensus price target across analysts currently stands at $77.
Insider Selling and the Road Ahead
Not everyone is holding through the volatility. Director Leonard J. LeBlanc sold 4,000 shares on August 17 at $96.07 apiece, part of a broader pattern of insider profit-taking that has accompanied the rally. The stock remains roughly 56% below its 52-week high of $128.55 reached in May, though it still shows a 341% gain year-to-date.
The company's market capitalization stands at approximately €3.80 billion. Management presented its optical connectivity strategy for AI data centers at a Needham conference on August 20, and further investor engagement is planned for September, including appearances at the Consumer & TMT Conference in New York on September 10 and the Morgan Stanley ASIA Best Corporate Day on September 21–22.
For now, the combination of a structural supply shortage, institutional accumulation, and fresh trading vehicles has put AXT firmly in the spotlight — even as the stock's day-to-day moves remind investors that parabolic rallies rarely travel in a straight line.
