Axa has moved to shield shareholders from dilution tied to its employee ownership scheme, committing up to EUR 470.8 million to buy back and cancel its own stock. The operation, which took effect Thursday, is designed to offset the impact of the Shareplan 2026 program and is scheduled for completion no later than October 29, 2026.

The buyback lands amid a broader rethink of how the French insurer deploys its capital. Under a strategy unveiled on September 15 covering the years through 2029, management is targeting annual growth in adjusted earnings per share of 7% to 9%, alongside an operating return on equity of 15% to 17%. Over the multi-year horizon, Axa expects cumulative organic cash inflows of roughly EUR 25 billion.

RBC Cuts Target but Keeps Outperform

Analysts are watching closely to see how much room remains for further repurchases. RBC Capital Markets lowered its price target on the stock to EUR 52 from EUR 54 on September 25, while reaffirming an Outperform rating. Analyst Ben Cohen attributed the revision to Axa's unchanged distribution targets — with those goals held steady, he trimmed his expectations for future buybacks, which in turn weighs on projected EPS growth. Cohen pointed out that the company's emphasis on growth, customer retention and technology will absorb financial resources in the near term.

Management Reshuffle at Axa XL

The capital discipline push coincides with continued operational restructuring. Axa XL, the group's property and casualty and specialty risks arm, appointed Dr. Thomas Götting as Chief Client & Distribution Officer for Asia-Pacific and Europe, effective Thursday. The move consolidates responsibility for client relationships and distribution across two core markets.

Elsewhere in the group, Axa Insurance UK disclosed that 58 roles in risk, compliance and governance are affected by the merger of its personal and commercial lines. The company expects to redeploy nearly all of those employees into newly created positions. At Axa France, the combination of the corporate and retail businesses is likewise reshaping job structures, with the group pledging to reassign almost all affected staff.

ICC Contract Ends, US Sanctions Cited

On the international front, Axa and the International Criminal Court ended their health insurance contract for court employees by mutual agreement as of Thursday, according to Reuters. Media reports linked the termination to concerns over potential United States sanctions.

Shares Slip Toward Key Average

The stock traded lower in Thursday's session, shedding 1.0% to EUR 41.85, leaving it just above its 200-day moving average of EUR 41.50. Investor attention now turns to the financial calendar: Axa has set October 29, 2026 for the release of its results for the first nine months of 2026 — the same date on which the buyback program is due to wrap up.
