Hospitals and police forces across Europe are increasingly chasing formal accreditation for how well they look after their own staff, and one Austrian clinic has just secured its badge for the next three years.

Kittsee Clinic has been awarded the national seal for workplace health promotion (Betriebliche Gesundheitsförderung, or BGF) for the 2026–2028 period. The honour comes from the BVAEB, the insurance body covering public-sector employees, railways and mining, and recognises a broad programme aimed at improving the wellbeing and health of the clinic's workforce.

It is one of a cluster of recent recognitions in healthcare and the public sector.

Certified standards across hospitals and schools

Several institutions in the hospital sector are pursuing certified staff-orientation standards. Alongside Kittsee, the Hospital of the Sisters of Mercy in Ried — part of the Innviertel religious-order hospital group — has again been named a family-friendly employer, with support tailored to different life phases forming the centrepiece of its efforts.

Vienna's Herz-Jesu Hospital also collected awards. At the 2026 national "Family & Career" prize it took third place at federal level in the non-profit category, having already been named Vienna's most family-friendly employer in 2025. It further earned a "outstanding" rating at the Klinik-Award Austria 2026 and silver in the MONEYTOR ranking, placing first within the Vinzenz Group and second nationwide.

On the clinical side, the hospital's Rabenhof day centre for chronic pain treated roughly 800 new patients in about a year, against a regular capacity of up to 750 patients annually. The hospital performs around 2,600 endoprosthetic procedures a year and has also established day-clinic hip replacement.

A US benchmark with six criteria

Similar evaluations are taking hold internationally. Phoenix Children's, a US paediatric hospital, reached 10th place in the 2026 "Healthiest 100 Workplaces in America" ranking — a jump of 16 places from 26th the year before, and its sixth annual appearance on the list.

The underlying analysis rests on six core criteria: culture and leadership, foundations, strategy, communication, programmes and reporting.

In Croatia, the Faculty of Dental Medicine at the University of Zagreb became the country's first faculty to receive the "Tvrtka prijatelj zdravlja" (health-friendly company) certificate from the national public health institute, HZJZ. Seven dimensions were assessed at the "Poligon zdravlja 2026" event on 21 October at Gunduli?eva 3 in Zagreb: nutrition, physical activity, occupational health protection, smoking and alcohol bans, the working environment and employee health. The award runs for two years and then requires reassessment.

Mental-health prevention and trained specialists

Beyond the medical sector, other employers are adopting certified health-management systems. Zug police in Switzerland were certified at the end of October 2026 as the first Swiss police corps to receive the "Friendly Work Space" label from the Health Promotion Switzerland foundation. The quality label is based on 14 main criteria and remains valid for three years. Commander Thomas Armbruster said the award confirmed the direction taken and would serve as further motivation for the force.

Mental health was the focus for Autobahn GmbH des Bundes, the federally owned motorway company. On 22 October 2026 at the Mental Health Summit in Munich it received the Mental Health Award from FOCUS-Business in the excellence class — its second consecutive win after first succeeding in 2025. Its portfolio includes standardised trauma-prevention offerings, health and trauma guides, training for managers, psychological first aiders and further prevention programmes.

Putting such programmes into practice requires qualified HR specialists. Jana Ratschker, an HR officer at the C.H.Beck printing house in Nördlingen, completed the BGM health-specialist qualification in the AOK Donau-Ries directorate area. AOK Bayern says it supports around 2,000 Bavarian companies each year in structuring workplace health measures.
