Austria Pledges EUR 319 Million as Infineon Maps Out Europe's First High-Volume GaN Wafer Plant
Published on 11/01/2026 at 21:40 | Editorial boerse-global.deInfineon's plans to build Europe's first high-volume production line for GaN power semiconductors on 300-millimeter wafers have secured a substantial public backer. The Republic of Austria is contributing EUR 319 million toward the roughly EUR 1.1 billion the chipmaker intends to sink into existing cleanroom capacity at its Villach site through 2034, with production slated to begin by the end of 2027.
The Austrian support emerged alongside a broader push by the Munich-based group into power electronics for artificial intelligence infrastructure. On October 21, Infineon said it had deepened its collaboration with NVIDIA on GaN-based power conversion systems for AI data centers. Central to that effort is a high-voltage DC intermediate circuit converter designed for 800-volt direct-current supply.
The two partners are also reaching out to Europe's startup scene. Starting October 22, Infineon, NVIDIA, Microsoft and UnternehmerTUM Accelerator opened a support program covering physical AI, robotics and industrial AI, running from January through April 2027.

Reference Designs Target Data Centers and Vehicles
Infineon's product offensive extended well beyond the NVIDIA tie-up. On Tuesday the company unveiled a reference design for a high-voltage power distribution board that lets systems be evaluated at ±400 volts and 800 volts; the board is due to be available in November 2026. A second reference design, rated at 5.6 kilowatts, is aimed at enterprise servers and edge AI. Such reference designs showcase technical solutions rather than booked orders.
For vehicle power distribution, Infineon presented its LinearFET MOSFET technology, citing electric vehicles and software-defined vehicles among the applications. It also rolled out a high-voltage battery management system reference design that allows computationally intensive battery models to run directly on the battery management unit. Rounding out the package was a new ENDOPACK brand identity for chip-embedding solutions — ENDOPACK Cell is described as an automotive-qualified high-voltage solution for integration into printed circuit boards — plus new OptiMOS-7 automotive MOSFETs that the company says achieve lower on-resistance than the predecessor products mentioned.
Chip Stocks Retreat as Intel Guidance Disappoints
The announcements did little to shield the stock from a sector-wide pullback. Infineon shares fell 4.5% on Friday to EUR 50.87, caught in a downdraft across European technology names. Intel's outlook was a key trigger: the U.S. chipmaker guided to revenue of USD 15 billion to 16 billion, short of the USD 17.1 billion analysts had expected. Media reports also linked the weakness to unease over heavy AI spending by Amazon and Alphabet, with disappointing quarterly figures and forecasts from Intel and Amazon weighing on sentiment across the industry.
Investors will get a clearer read on the company's own trajectory on November 10, when Infineon is scheduled to report results for the fourth quarter and fiscal 2026, together with its guidance for the 2026/27 fiscal year.
