AST SpaceMobile's Spectrum Squeeze: Viasat Objection, a Four-Carrier European Overture, and a Wall Street Split

AST SpaceMobile's investment case is being pulled in two directions at once. On one side sits a possible European opening with four of the continent's biggest carriers. On the other, a spectrum objection from Viasat and a pair of clashing analyst calls remind investors that ambition and secured business are not the same thing.

The stock's latest session did little to settle the argument. Shares slipped 2.8% to €36.30, a move that offers no positive confirmation for the bulls. No single cause can be read into one trading day — but the underlying questions are worth more attention than the daily tape.

Viasat Puts Spectrum Access in the Dock

At the heart of the near-term debate is a filing from Viasat, which argues that parts of the frequencies AST has applied for overlap with existing satellite services, while others are not available for the intended operation. AST counters that national approvals and technical interference-mitigation measures are required. The system, which has 248 authorized satellites, is meant to draw on additional mobile and V-band spectrum.

The distinction matters. A satellite license does not automatically answer every question about spectrum access. Viasat's move is neither a ban nor a confirmed technical incompatibility — but dismissing it as background noise would be just as hasty. The dispute touches access to a precondition for the planned service.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying AST SpaceMobile?

Europe: An Opening, Not an Order

The four-carrier initiative fits neatly with AST's partner-first strategy. Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone are examining a joint bid for European MSS frequencies. AST already works with all four, and the Satellite Connect Europe joint venture with Vodafone is intended to link BlueBird satellites to European mobile networks.

That makes AST a plausible candidate. It does not make the company the winner of a selection that has not yet been concluded. Neither the spectrum award nor the choice of partner has been decided. The letter of intent is non-binding, no financial terms have been disclosed, and the carriers have no plans to invest directly in a satellite constellation.

AST sizes the European market at more than 500 million mobile customers. A fresh spectrum assignment is not expected before 2029. That scale explains the interest in Europe — but it is neither a revenue forecast nor a promise that AST will secure access to that market.

Nor does the initiative replace existing satellite partnerships. Deutsche Telekom is separately planning to deploy Starlink in Germany. The European cooperation is a strategic opportunity, not evidence of exclusive customer lock-in. Keeping those categories apart does not require playing down the news; it merely avoids valuing an option as if it were a signed contract.

The Balance Sheet Is a Bridge, Not a Solution

The capital picture argues against premature euphoria too. Free cash flow came in at ?$1.14 billion in fiscal 2025. Pro-forma liquidity following the latest convertible bond stands at more than $3.7 billion.

That is substantial financial headroom — but above all a bridge to further execution. Liquidity alone settles neither spectrum questions nor guarantees commercial progress. Analysts expect roughly $3.2 billion in additional cash burn before the European allocation, a figure that underlines how tightly timeline and financing are intertwined.

Two Banks, Two Conclusions

The analyst community is split on how to read the risks. On October 12, Deutsche Bank upgraded AST SpaceMobile from Hold to Buy and kept its $93 price target. Analyst Bryan Kraft called the preceding selloff a misinterpretation of the market. The bank also flagged the possibility that the impact of SpaceX's spectrum deal is being misjudged, with Kraft pointing to recent weakness, positive developments and overlooked catalysts.

AST SpaceMobile at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Piper Sandler took the opposite view about a week ago, cutting its rating from Overweight to Neutral and slashing its price target from $98 to $54. Analyst Alexander Potter cited reduced confidence in the launch pace for 2026–2027 and competition from SpaceX.

The SpaceX backdrop is real but often overstated. On October 8, SpaceX agreed to acquire Grain Management's nationwide 800-MHz spectrum portfolio for Starlink Mobile, a deal still subject to FCC approval — not a completed takeover. October's share-price weakness was linked in coverage to competition fears, yet the planned purchase alone does not mean SpaceX will immediately displace AST with its carrier partners. As Deutsche Bank argued, the move does not make SpaceX a directly stronger rival to AST as a supplier to those partners. Building out proprietary spectrum and holding a position inside existing partner relationships are two different questions.

Piper Sandler's concern, by contrast, extends beyond SpaceX to AST's ability to push the buildout forward through satellite launches. That sets concrete execution risk against the strategic case.

The bottom line: AST SpaceMobile has attractive partnerships and considerable liquidity. The decisive test remains converting those into usable spectrum rights and commercially durable progress. Viasat's objection is a reminder that a wide gap separates technical ambition from secured business — and confirmed execution steps deserve more weight than the next partnership headline.
