AST SpaceMobile's Ground Game Advances While Wall Street Squares Off Over the Launch Clock

AST SpaceMobile is building out the plumbing for its satellite-to-phone service faster than it is winning consensus on Wall Street. The company said Tuesday that more than 60 gateways are already deployed, installed or in planning, with over 3,000 coverage cells switched on in the United States. The stock, however, has been caught in a broader retreat: it fell 4.9% in one session as volatile space names—SpaceX, Rocket Lab and an industry fund among those under pressure, according to media reports—sold off alongside technology shares, and it was down another 7.3% on the day of the infrastructure update. No link between that second slide and the company's announcements has been established.

Groundwork Is Not Coverage

The distinction matters. Not every one of those gateways is ready for operation, and AST itself describes its first commercial offering as intermittent rather than continuous. Initial service is targeted to begin before the end of 2026 in the US, Canada, Japan, the UK and Saudi Arabia. The company also cites more than 60 mobile partners representing over 3 billion subscribers—a figure that describes addressable market potential, not users already connected.

That gap between partnership, technical preparation and live service is exactly where the bear case has taken root. Piper Sandler cut its rating to Neutral from Overweight on October 13 and slashed its price target to $54 from $98, citing reduced confidence in the satellite launch cadence during 2026–2027 and competition from SpaceX in the direct-to-cell space. The call targets the reliability of the buildout path rather than the size of the prize.

Deutsche Bank went the other way a day earlier, upgrading the stock to Buy from Hold with a $93 target. Analyst Bryan Kraft described the preceding selloff as a market misinterpretation. The two verdicts are less a contradiction to be resolved than a measure of how differently the same equity story can be weighted: the scale of the opportunity against the durability of the route to it.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying AST SpaceMobile?

Europe's Overture Is Still Just an Overture

Adding a fresh angle on Monday, AST welcomed a letter of intent from Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone, which will examine a possible joint bid for European mobile satellite spectrum. AST has been described as a potential supplier of satellite capacity—not a chosen partner. No spectrum licence has been granted, and no satellite partner has been selected, so the initiative does not yet translate into a firm order.

The company pointed to its European-operated ground infrastructure and its BlueBird satellites as the assets that could support service readiness in a market of more than 500 million mobile customers. The interest of major carriers underscores the strategic weight of satellite-backed mobile services. It does not substitute for partner selection or practical execution—the very intermediate steps where skepticism about the rollout concentrates.

The Supply Plan and the Sector's Bad Day

Wednesday brought further grounds for that caution. Media reports interpreted a company communication as a delay versus the earlier goal of offering temporary nationwide service in some markets as early as the start of 2026. That puts the recent sector-wide pullback in perspective: the weak tape explains the selling pressure but does not answer the operational questions. AST's stock now depends not only on whether investors find space attractive this week, but on how it manages the tension between a large addressable market, competition and the pace of execution.

Europe's spectrum initiative offers a perspective. Whether it becomes a durable business for AST will be settled by concrete agreements and delivery—not by the scale of the industry narrative.
