ASML Stays on the Buyback Treadmill as October 14 Earnings Loom

ASML repurchased EUR 442.5 million of its own shares from September 28 to October 2, extending its buyback run before Q3 2026 results on October 14.

ASML Holding kept its foot on the accelerator of its share repurchase program through the final days of September and into early October, disclosing buybacks worth a combined EUR 442,481,981 between September 28 and October 2. The Dutch semiconductor equipment maker confirmed the transactions today, underscoring a capital-return strategy that has run without interruption for weeks.

The buying was steady rather than sporadic. ASML picked up 50,000 of its own shares at the end of September, then followed with packages of 57,000 and 50,000 on the next two trading days. On October 1 and October 2, it added 60,000 shares apiece. Each tranche chips away at the number of shares in free float.

That burst extends a pattern established earlier in the month. Between September 14 and 18, the company repurchased 304,500 shares, and in the trading week from September 21 to 25 it acquired a further 165,200. The latest multi-hundred-million-euro slice confirms management's commitment to returning capital to shareholders right up to the edge of its next earnings release.

Analysts Split, but Not Alarmed

Ahead of that report, the sell side has offered measured views on how much room the stock has left. Jefferies reaffirmed a "Hold" rating with a price target of EUR 1,650 on September 30, leaving its stance untouched. UBS had already kept its "Buy" rating in place on September 28.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?

The shares have been a standout performer this year regardless of the cautious calls. They closed Monday at EUR 1,659.40, and today's quote of EUR 1,656.40 represents a marginal move of -0.08%. Year-to-date, the stock is up 80%, and it sits just 5.1% below its 52-week high.

Europe's Empty Order Book

While the buyback program hums along, the geographic demand picture remains uneven. Frank Heemskerk, ASML's Executive Vice President of Public Affairs, said on September 25 that the company is currently selling nothing in Europe. He pointed to a lack of investment and the absence of new chip fabrication plants in the region as the root causes, and urged European authorities to take steps that would stimulate demand for semiconductors manufactured on the continent.

Geopolitics adds another layer of uncertainty. Roughly a week ago, ASML chief executive Christophe Fouquet cautioned against overly broad export restrictions on the China business, warning that such measures could push Chinese firms like Huawei to accelerate development of their own competing technologies. A report from the Centre for Technology & Statecraft illustrated the scale of past shipments: it put the number of immersion DUV systems acquired by Chinese manufacturers through early 2026 at around 343 units, of which roughly 270 were ASML's NXT:1980i model. The study's authors advocated tighter export controls.

The October 14 Test

Attention now shifts to operations. According to media reports, ASML will publish third-quarter 2026 results on October 14, with a conference call for investors scheduled for 15:00 MESZ the same day, when management will offer insight into the numbers and the order book. The report will show how demand for lithography systems held up over the quarter, and how far the global developments weighing on the industry have begun to shape operating margins and incoming orders.
