ASML Shares Advance 3.2% as Buyback Rolls On and China Export Debate Intensifies

ASML stock climbed 3.2% on Friday to close at EUR 1,657.80, lifted by a broader recovery across European semiconductor equipment makers rather than by any company-specific development. Renewed optimism over global investment in artificial intelligence underpinned the sector, while a firmer tone on US technology exchanges added further support.
According to AP, the Nasdaq gained ground after the release of fresh US labor market data, which noticeably eased investors' inflation concerns.
The advance came in the slipstream of a sector-wide rebound. As Dow Jones Newswires reported, strong results from US chipmaker Micron and robust demand for memory chips provided the catalyst for the entire industry. ASML's role as a supplier to chipmakers worldwide means that rising demand for memory components and processors used in AI applications feeds directly through to manufacturers of lithography systems. European semiconductor names have consequently shown pronounced sensitivity to signals emerging from US and Asian chip markets.
Buyback Program Continues
Alongside the market moves, the Dutch equipment maker pressed ahead with its capital return program. During the trading week of September 21 to 25, ASML repurchased a total of 165,200 of its own shares. Daily transaction values ranged between EUR 15,335,519 and EUR 86,879,282, with the company spending EUR 248,163,188 on the buyback over the period.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?
Such transactions reduce the number of shares freely traded on the market, underscoring management's continued capital discipline and strengthening the position of remaining shareholders.
Fouquet Warns on Overly Strict China Controls
Beyond day-to-day trading, international trade policy remains a central issue for the company. In an interview with the Financial Times, ASML chief executive Christophe Fouquet cautioned that overly far-reaching export restrictions on semiconductor equipment to China could accelerate the development of an independent domestic chip industry in the region. At the same time, the CEO stressed that certain controls can be justified on security grounds.
The matter has also drawn the attention of government policymakers. According to Reuters, citing information from Bloomberg News, Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten raised the question of possible US export controls relating to ASML in a conversation with US President Donald Trump.
October 14 Earnings in the Spotlight
With the week's gains banked, attention now turns to the company's upcoming financial report. ASML will publish its third-quarter results on October 14. Investors are chiefly awaiting signals on order intake during the period. Following the recent share price gain, the stock now trades just 5.2% below its 52-week high.
