ASML’s Record Quarter Wasn’t the Only Thing Investors Were Pricing

ASML reported Q3 2026 revenue of EUR 11.7 billion and net profit of EUR 5.0 billion, yet shares fell 3.4% as revenue missed analyst expectations.

ASML’s latest numbers would usually have been enough to grab the market’s attention. On paper, the company posted a record quarter. In practice, the shares still fell 3.4% in a single day, a reminder that strong results and a strong stock reaction are not always the same thing.

The third quarter of 2026 brought in EUR 11.7 billion of revenue and EUR 5.0 billion of net profit. Gross margin came in at 57.5%, underlining that the business was not just growing, but doing so profitably. ASML said turnover landed at the top end of its own guidance range.

That said, the market appeared to focus on a different detail: the revenue figure came in below analyst expectations, according to media reports. In other words, the quarter was robust, but not quite strong enough to clear the bar investors had set. The gap between what a company delivers and what the market has already discounted can matter more than the headline direction of the business.

Sector conditions added to the pressure. Media reports also said that higher-than-expected US inflation data weighed on technology stocks, while Asian semiconductor names came under notable pressure. Separately, broader selling in chip shares was cited as a drag on the session. ASML was not moving in isolation.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?

The company’s guidance is now the real test. For the fourth quarter of 2026, ASML expects revenue of EUR 14.2 billion to EUR 15.2 billion, with gross margin around 57%. Both ends of that revenue range sit above the just-reported quarterly figure, which means the next step up is substantial.

For the full year 2026, ASML is targeting revenue of EUR 44 billion to EUR 45 billion and gross margin of around 56%. Those are forward-looking targets, not already-earned results. That distinction matters after a day like this one, when investors are weighing what the company has done against what it still needs to prove.

Cash returns also formed part of the picture. During the reporting quarter, ASML repurchased around EUR 4.1 billion of its own shares under its ongoing buyback programme. It also set a second interim dividend of EUR 1.88 per ordinary share, payable on 4 November 2026.

Taken together, the release leaves a mixed but far from negative impression. ASML has demonstrated strong profitability and set out an ambitious path ahead. Yet the share-price reaction shows that the bar is high, and that revenue delivery — not just profits or upgraded expectations — remains the metric investors are watching most closely.
