ASML's Real Story This Quarter: Service Revenue, a Patent Trail, and a One-Off Gain
Published on 10/16/2026 at 16:12 | Editorial boerse-global.deASML's third-quarter 2026 results landed Wednesday with a headline revenue figure of EUR 11.7 billion and a net profit of EUR 5.0 billion — but the more instructive detail sits in how that profit was assembled. JPMorgan's read on the quarter, published today, points to the company's installed-base business as the quiet force behind a gross margin that came in at 57.5%, ahead of the roughly 56% consensus.
The margin beat has a name
Service and upgrade revenue from ASML's existing tool fleet — what the industry calls Installed Base Management — contributed EUR 3.289 billion in the quarter, against total group revenue of EUR 11.662 billion. That mix matters more than the top line alone. JPMorgan explicitly credits the high-margin maintenance and upgrade stream for pushing profitability past expectations, a reminder that shipping more machines is only one lever ASML pulls.
The distinction between revenue and profit quality is not academic here. A quarter can post strong sales and still disappoint on earnings, or the reverse. In this case, the installed-base contribution helps explain why the margin outperformed without requiring a surge in new system deliveries.
A EUR 500 million line item investors should separate out
Buried inside the EUR 4.960 billion net profit was a EUR 500 million gain from ASML's stake in Mistral AI. That is a real contribution to the reported figure, but it is not operating income, and it does not speak to the earning power of the core business. JPMorgan's emphasis on the gross margin stands apart from this one-off — the two should be read on separate lines. The participation gain flatters the bottom line without saying anything about whether ASML's lithography and service operations are becoming more or less profitable.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?
Guidance suggests the margin strength persists
For the fourth quarter of 2026, ASML projects a gross margin of approximately 57%, with JPMorgan noting consensus sits at 56.4%. The company is guiding above expectations on profitability even after a strong reporting period. That is a forecast, not a result — and it says nothing about whether the Mistral AI gain recurs. What it does indicate is that management sees the current margin profile as durable rather than a one-quarter anomaly.
Meanwhile, a patent trail points toward Besi's turf
Separately, Reuters reported today on a patent analysis by SemiAnalysis covering 27 ASML filings. The research firm's reading: the documents hint at a hybrid bonding product that could eventually put ASML in competition with BE Semiconductor Industries. ASML has not confirmed any such tool is in development.
That gap between patent interpretation and product announcement is where the story lives. Nothing in the filings establishes an imminent market entry, a revenue contribution, or even a confirmed competitive threat to Besi. It opens a strategic possibility whose financial weight would only become concrete with a validated product. Investors should not fold this into the confirmed order book.
The confirmed demand picture is the firmer yardstick
On that front, the numbers carry more weight than patent speculation. CEO Christophe Fouquet has pointed to substantial orders for 2028, along with customer interest extending into 2029 and 2030, as Reuters reported Tuesday. That demand is tangible in a way the patent-derived product angle is not.
ASML Holding at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Capacity is the constraint. By the company's own account, planned supply will not fully meet customer demand over the next two years, and ASML is evaluating additional capacity expansions. The backlog is real; converting it into shipped tools is the harder task.
Taken together, the quarter offers more than a single headline profit number. JPMorgan's analysis isolates an operating margin driver in the installed-base business, the Mistral AI gain demands separate treatment, and the patent signal against Besi adds a strategic thread that remains unconfirmed. Confirmed orders, available capacity, and execution in the existing business stay the more reliable measures — with the fourth quarter's margin delivery the next test of whether the guidance holds.
