ASML's Order Book Looks Deep — But the Company Won't Sign Until It Can Deliver

ASML will vet 2029-2030 orders before accepting them, as Q3 2026 revenue hit EUR 11.7bn and 2027-2028 capacity is set to fall short of demand.

ASML has a demand problem that most manufacturers would envy: customers are knocking years before they can be served. Yet the Dutch chip-equipment maker is deliberately keeping those would-be buyers at arm's length, and that caution says as much about its business as any headline sales figure.

According to a Reuters report published Thursday, ASML will not accept orders for delivery in 2029 and 2030 until it has vetted the conditions on both sides of the transaction. Individual customers have already expressed interest in those far-off delivery years, the company confirmed on Wednesday — but interest is not the same as a signed contract, and ASML is treating the gap between the two with care.

What the third quarter actually showed

The operational backdrop is strong. ASML reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of EUR 11.7 billion, a net profit of EUR 5.0 billion and a gross margin of 57.5%. For the current quarter, management guided to revenue of between EUR 14.2 billion and EUR 15.2 billion — a forecast, not booked business.

Those numbers demonstrate present-day strength, but they cannot substitute for scrutiny of long-range customer plans. A completed quarter and the valuation of future opportunities are measured on different scales, and that distinction is precisely what has kept investors on edge.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?

Supply, not demand, is the binding constraint

ASML has said its planned capacity for 2027 and 2028 will fall short of expected customer demand. In response, the company is examining additional capacity increases for 2028. That review is not the same as committed capacity — an investigation is not a decision, and until it becomes one, the supply ceiling remains in place.

The message to investors is therefore twofold. Winning more orders is only half the task; the other half is honoring the delivery commitments ASML can realistically meet. High customer interest on its own does not lift existing shipping limits.

Reuters adds a further dimension: ASML also expects to benefit from price increases in 2027 and 2028. Alongside available volumes, pricing could contribute to the business's development, though the report does not quantify how large that effect will be.

A deliberate gate, not a demand signal

CEO Christophe Fouquet has pointed to customers already eyeing orders for 2029 and 2030. Those approaches open a long-term perspective without guaranteeing future revenue. What they do show is why the ASML debate extends well beyond the next quarter: customers are working with a procurement horizon that stretches years into the future.

By insisting on a review before accepting such orders, ASML is drawing a line between customer willingness and its own ability to deliver. Only when the two align should far-reaching inquiries become accepted orders. Read that way, the restraint is a matter of careful delivery planning — not automatically a sign of weakening demand.

ASML Holding at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Two questions, one stock

The operational question is how ASML can serve the demand in front of it. The market question reaches further: how durable are the investments underpinning that demand, and what valuation do they justify?

That the strong quarterly figures failed to reverse the recent selling pressure illustrates the split. The results shore up the operational case. On their own, they are not enough to dispel the broader concerns about investment and valuation.
