ASML's Buyback Receipts Meet a Harder Question: Will AI Spending Ever Pay Off?

ASML has disclosed the purchase of 233,867 of its own shares for a total of €352,032,719, a transaction completed last week and reported yesterday. The filing lands alongside a second interim dividend for 2026 of €1.88 per ordinary share, declared roughly a week earlier and payable on 4 November 2026. Two distinct forms of capital return, then — one already settled, one still to come. Neither the published repurchase sum nor the dividend implies any further buyback tranche or additional payout decision.

The stock changed hands at €1,455.20, under pressure from a broader retreat in European semiconductor names. The drag has little to do with ASML's order book. Investors are questioning whether the enormous sums being poured into artificial intelligence will ever generate adequate returns, and Reuters reports that rising crude oil prices are further eroding risk appetite. Market participants are also holding back ahead of results from the major AI players, which could sharpen the picture of how durable the economic assumptions behind the technology really are.

Demand and profitability are not the same question

Two perspectives are colliding. On one side, ASML reports that its customers are raising their demand forecasts. On the other, the market is growing more skeptical about the returns on the investments underpinning those forecasts. A healthy appetite for orders does not, by itself, answer the profitability question on the customer side.

Speaking at last week's results presentation, CEO Christophe Fouquet said some customers had already expressed interest in placing orders for 2029 and 2030. Planned delivery volumes, he added, will not fully cover demand in the years before that. Those remarks describe long-term willingness to invest. They are not the same as confirmed orders, nor are they proof of sufficient returns on AI spending — a distinction that matters for reading today's trading.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?

The numbers underneath

The operating backdrop offers a counterweight. ASML reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of €11.7 billion and a net profit of €5.0 billion, with a gross margin of 57.5%. For the fourth quarter, the company guided to revenue of €14.2–15.2 billion — a forecast, not revenue already booked.

ASML also lifted the floor of its 2026 outlook and now expects full-year revenue of €44–45 billion, with a gross margin of around 56%. The lower end of the range was raised, a more precise statement than a blanket upgrade of every forecast figure. Management has said planned supply is unlikely to fully meet customer demand in 2027 and 2028, with interest extending into the two years after that. Confirmed orders, again, are a separate matter.

JPMorgan trims its target, keeps its rating

The latest analyst move pairs a constructive stance with a more cautious valuation. JPMorgan analyst Sandeep Deshpande cut his price target on Thursday while retaining an "Overweight" rating.

ASML Holding at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

For shareholders, the takeaway is the gap between the operating business and the multiple the market is willing to pay for it. ASML's demand commentary points to sustained customer interest, and its capital returns put cash directly in investors' hands. What is weighing on the shares is confidence in the earning power of the entire AI investment cycle — a concern that strong company results alone will not dispel.
