ASML's Buyback Filing and Analyst Split Overshadow the Real Test: Hitting Q4 Guidance

ASML repurchased EUR 352 million of stock as HSBC raised and JPMorgan trimmed price targets; the Q4 revenue guidance of EUR 14.2-15.2 billion remains the key test.

ASML has spent the past week buying back its own stock and watching two of Europe's most closely followed research houses pull their price targets in opposite directions. Neither development tells investors much about the question that actually matters — whether the Dutch chip-equipment maker can deliver the revenue step-up it has promised for the closing quarter of 2026.

The company disclosed repurchases totaling EUR 352,032,719 for the previous week, spread across several trading sessions. The transactions fall under an existing buyback program rather than any newly announced framework, making the filing a record of capital already committed rather than a fresh signal of intent. Shares rose 2.5% on the day, though the advance came amid a broader rebound in AI-linked and semiconductor names.

A Sector Bounce, Not a Company Catalyst

Reuters attributed that recovery to falling bond yields and softening crude prices, which lifted technology stocks after the prior week's losses. The report identified no ASML-specific trigger. Investors should resist folding the buyback disclosure and the industry-wide rally into a single cause-and-effect story — the two ran on parallel tracks.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?

The fundamental backdrop, by contrast, is concrete. For the third quarter of 2026, ASML reported net revenue of EUR 11.7 billion, a net profit of EUR 5.0 billion and a gross margin of 57.5%. Those are reported figures, not consensus estimates, and they establish the base from which the current quarter will be measured.

Guidance is where the uncertainty sits. Management has guided fourth-quarter net revenue to a range of EUR 14.2 billion to EUR 15.2 billion — the entire band above the just-reported quarter. For the full year, ASML projects net revenue of EUR 44 billion to EUR 45 billion. The annual figure frames the overall revenue picture; the quarterly range sets the bar for the next reporting period.

Two Houses, Two Directions

HSBC Global Investment Research lifted its ASML price target on Friday to EUR 2,261 from EUR 2,177, reiterating a buy rating. The bank pointed to improved visibility on growth beyond 2028 and to the strength of the order book. JPMorgan moved the other way a day earlier, trimming its target to $2,350 from $2,400 while keeping an overweight rating. Both firms stayed positive on the stock even as their targets diverged — and neither disclosed a rationale for the direction of its revision.

That split leaves the buyback as a secondary data point. The repurchases document how ASML is deploying capital; they do not substitute for the operational hurdle ahead. What counts for the coming months is whether the company converts its fourth-quarter forecast into reported revenue. Until then, the record third quarter stands as fact and the outlook remains exactly that — a projection.
