ASML's €45 Billion Target Meets Two Wildcards: Unconfirmed Patents and Washington's Pen
Published on 10/18/2026 at 22:11 | Editorial boerse-global.deASML has raised its full-year revenue sights and kept analysts broadly onside, yet the chip-equipment maker's investment case now hinges on two variables it does not fully control — a product line it has never confirmed, and a US export bill it is actively lobbying against.
What the Q3 Filing Actually Says
The Dutch group reported third-quarter 2026 net sales of €11.7 billion, a gross margin of 57.5% and net profit of €5.0 billion. Guidance for the closing quarter points higher still: net sales of €14.2 billion to €15.2 billion, comfortably above the just-reported figure.
For the full year, ASML lifted its net sales forecast to a range of €44 billion to €45 billion, with gross margin expected at around 56%. That upgraded outlook is the hard, company-confirmed anchor against which everything else should be measured.
Two Banks, Two Directions, One Verdict
Post-earnings revisions from Wall Street split on magnitude but not on conviction. JPMorgan trimmed its price target to $2,350 from $2,400 while holding an Overweight rating. Citi moved the other way, lifting its target to €2,300 from €2,200 and keeping its buy recommendation.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?
The divergence is about how much upside each house sees, not whether to own the stock. Comparing the two targets head-to-head would mislead in any case, since one is denominated in dollars and the other in euros. What carries signal is the direction of travel: slightly more cautious at JPMorgan, slightly more bullish at Citi.
The Patent Trail Reuters Picked Up
A separate thread emerged on Friday, when Reuters reported signs that ASML may be developing a hybrid-bonding product. The claim traces back to SemiAnalysis, which drew its inference from 27 patent applications rather than from any announcement by the company. ASML has not confirmed the work.
That gap matters for anyone modelling the stock. Patent filings hint at a possible first step; they say nothing about whether a product reaches the market, let alone what revenue it might generate. Treating the report as an addition to the confirmed outlook would conflate an unproven strategic option with booked business. The news opens a door — it does not underwrite a single euro of extra sales.
Dassen Takes Aim at the Match Act
On firmer ground, ASML has spoken plainly about export policy. Finance chief Roger Dassen came out on Wednesday against proposed restrictions under the US Match Act, which would curb sales of DUV lithography systems to China, as Reuters reported.
His argument cuts deeper than lost orders. Dassen warned that such curbs could speed up China's development of competing technology — meaning the risk is not only forgone sales but the acceleration of a domestic rival. It is worth keeping in mind that these are proposed rules, and that the competitive-acceleration scenario is Dassen's assessment rather than an established outcome.

Where the Order Book Stands
Longer-range demand also surfaced this week. Reuters reported Wednesday that customers have expressed interest in placing orders for tools slated for 2029 and 2030. Interest, though, is not a signed contract — ASML continues to gauge customer willingness alongside its own capacity to meet future demand.
Strip it all back and the picture sorts itself into layers. The raised €44–45 billion guidance and the ~56% margin target are confirmed company statements. The hybrid-bonding product remains an unconfirmed possibility inferred from filings. Export policy sits between the two, shaping the conditions under which ASML can exploit its technology in China at all. For investors, the test ahead is execution against the upgraded outlook — and whether the patent trail ever turns into something the company is willing to put its name to.
