ASML Rises on AI Cheer, but Analysts Split on What the Stock Is Worth
Published on 10/21/2026 at 20:11 | Editorial boerse-global.deASML shares climbed 2.9% on Tuesday, swept up in a broad rally across semiconductor equities after Super Micro Computer lifted its preliminary revenue outlook. The update, widely reported in the media, reinforced confidence in AI infrastructure spending, and ASML rode the sector wave. The catalyst came from the market backdrop rather than from any fresh announcement by the Dutch equipment maker — a distinction that matters for anyone reading the move as company-specific news.
Super Micro's guidance concerns its own top line. For ASML, it merely underpins expectations of sustained demand across the chip sector; no new order or revised corporate forecast can be inferred from it. The advance also stands in sharp contrast to the skepticism that gripped the stock as recently as mid-October, when Reuters reported a decline for ASML amid a broader market selloff, citing doubts about the lofty expectations baked into 2028 and 2029.
Two Houses, Two Conclusions
On the same day, BofA Securities reiterated its buy rating on ASML, pointing to revenue and margin potential as well as possible price increases as drivers. Jefferies analyst Janardan Menon takes a more guarded view: cyclically compressing valuation multiples could cap the upside. For investors, strong demand alone does not settle the question — the price the market is willing to pay for future earnings matters just as much.
The quarterly results published roughly a week ago give the bulls operational ammunition. Gross margin for the third quarter of 2026 came in at 57.5%, and the business built on ASML's installed machine base contributed EUR 3.289 billion, or 28.2% of revenue. Upgrades to existing systems propped up margins, which means earnings do not hinge solely on how many new tools leave the factory — retrofitting machines already in the field carries real weight.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?
Management's guidance offers a concrete yardstick for the margin case BofA is making. For the closing quarter of 2026, ASML projected service revenue of around EUR 3.7 billion and a full-year gross margin of roughly 56%. Those figures sit alongside third-quarter revenue of EUR 11.7 billion, net profit of EUR 5.0 billion, and fourth-quarter sales guidance of EUR 14.2 billion to EUR 15.2 billion, with the full-year outlook at EUR 44 billion to EUR 45 billion.
Demand Stretches to 2030 — Orders Don't
Interest from individual customers already extends to deliveries in 2029 and 2030. Those are inquiries, not confirmed bookings, and should not be treated as secured revenue — they signal long-term planning needs rather than contracted sales. CEO Christophe Fouquet has said the planned supply will not fully cover customer demand in the coming years, and ASML is weighing a larger capacity build-out. That cuts both ways: it supports the case for enduring demand while raising the stakes on execution. Extra capacity has to exist before it can generate revenue, and delays at customer fabs can weigh on the trajectory. A bullish read on long-term need is no substitute for checking when tools can actually ship.
Menon's pushback lands at a different point than BofA's operational confidence. Even rising profits do not guarantee a matching share-price gain if investors apply lower multiples. Good business performance and limited upside can coexist. Add political uncertainty: CFO Roger Dassen has criticized the proposed US MATCH Act targeting DUV sales and service in China. The proposal is not an enacted restriction, but it is an additional risk factor.
ASML Holding at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Meanwhile, ASML continues to execute its existing share buyback program, reporting repurchases from the prior trading week on Monday — another corporate activity, though not a documented trigger for today's gain. The takeaway for the session: ASML is benefiting from renewed faith in AI infrastructure. Whether that faith translates into incremental business is a question to be judged separately from the price action.
