ASML Rebounds as Quantum Optics Deal and Samsung, TSMC Alliances Redraw Its Roadmap

A sector-wide argument over how fast artificial intelligence should be allowed to advance knocked ASML off balance at the start of the week. By Wednesday, the Dutch lithography supplier had steadied, with its shares adding 1.3% in European trading to reach EUR 1,398.00.
The trigger for Monday's retreat was a public push by prominent industry figures, led by Anthropic chief Dario Amodei, for a slower pace of development on so-called frontier AI models. Reports put ASML's decline that session at 6.1%. Such signals tend to unsettle markets quickly, feeding doubts about whether major technology companies will keep spending at full tilt on the data centers that consume their most advanced chips.
Buybacks Continue Through the Noise
ASML's management has not let the short-term mood alter its capital plans. In a regulatory filing on Monday, the company disclosed further transactions under its ongoing share repurchase program, which runs across 2026 to 2028 and pulls stock off the market on a scheduled basis. Despite the recent consolidation, the equity has still climbed 52% since the turn of the year.
What matters more to the company's longer arc is the groundwork now being laid with the largest chipmakers, as the industry prepares for its next manufacturing standard.

Samsung Takes High-NA EUV Into Volume DRAM
Last week ASML announced an expansion of its long-standing strategic partnership with Samsung Electronics, centered on High-NA EUV lithography and modern production techniques. The South Korean group intends to bring High-NA EUV into volume manufacturing of future DRAM memory by 2028 — a first for the semiconductor industry. Samsung is also joining an industry initiative to establish 12-inch photomask technology.
A day earlier, ASML had launched a comparable joint effort with contract manufacturer TSMC. That alliance aims to build a pilot line for 12-inch masks by 2031, clearing the path for 12-inch High-NA lithography systems to be deployed in the production of highly advanced structural nodes by 2033.
A Second Campus in Brainport
Carrying out that technology roadmap demands substantial physical expansion. On September 8, Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten was on hand for the ceremonial groundbreaking of a second major industrial campus in the Brainport region. The site is slated to span roughly 350,000 square meters and accommodate as many as 20,000 jobs. The first phase is targeted for completion in 2029 and designed for at least 3,000 employees.
Reaching Into Photonic Quantum Hardware
ASML is simultaneously probing new areas of physics. On September 9, the company and Xanadu Quantum Technologies unveiled a partnership to develop sophisticated lithography processes for photonic quantum hardware, with the goal of deliberately reducing optical losses in chips built for quantum computers.
Underpinning all of it is an upgraded full-year outlook. For 2026, ASML projects net sales of between EUR 43 billion and EUR 45 billion at a gross margin of 54% to 56%, following a net profit of EUR 2.9 billion in the second quarter of 2026.
