ASML Can See the Orders Coming Through 2030 — Delivering Them Is Another Matter

ASML says planned 2027-2028 supply won't fully meet customer demand, as clients already inquire about 2029-2030 orders; Q3 revenue hit EUR 11.7 billion.

ASML has given investors a rare long-range signal: customers are already inquiring about equipment orders for 2029 and 2030, Reuters reported Thursday, citing strong bookings and sustained client interest. The disclosure eases concerns about whether the artificial-intelligence investment cycle has staying power beyond the current fiscal year. Shares rose 2.2% on the day, though the move alone cannot be tied directly to the outlook.

The distinction between interest and commitment matters here. Inquiries about future deliveries sketch out customer planning; firm orders describe business already on the books. Both support confidence, but they carry very different degrees of certainty.

Demand Outruns the Plan Through 2028

ASML said Wednesday that its planned supply for 2027 and 2028 will not fully cover customer demand — a gap between what clients want and what the company expects to build. That statement is not a promise to satisfy every request in those years. The company had previously communicated a 30% capacity increase for 2028; any expansion beyond that remains under review rather than confirmed.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?

To close the shortfall, ASML is weighing several levers at once, according to Reuters: shorter assembly times for new systems, refurbishment of machines already installed in the field, and faster machine models. No single fix takes priority. Larger site expansions, by contrast, move slowly — the first phase of the Eindhoven build-out is not due to come online until 2029, offering no near-term relief.

Pricing forms a second track. ASML plans increases starting in 2027, with the full effect expected in 2028. Higher prices do not clear a delivery bottleneck, and studying extra capacity does not guarantee the company can meet all expected demand — the two levers carry different weight for the business ahead.

A Strong Quarter Behind the Warning

The financial backdrop came Wednesday with third-quarter 2026 results: revenue of EUR 11.7 billion, a net profit of EUR 5.0 billion and a gross margin of 57.5%. ASML lifted its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to EUR 44 billion to EUR 45 billion, and guided fourth-quarter sales to EUR 14.2 billion to EUR 15.2 billion.

Those figures are reported fact; the path beyond them remains forecast. For investors, the takeaway sits in the execution gap. Demand points to durable investment needs, yet limited supply caps how much of it converts into revenue. ASML has named several avenues but has not yet confirmed capacity beyond its existing expansion plan. Tangible progress in assembly, refurbishment and machine speed would be the clearest evidence that the company can keep the expected bottleneck in check.
