ASML Adds 3.2% as Micron's Blowout Week Lifts Chip Equipment Makers

ASML Holding shares climbed 3.2% on Friday to close at EUR 1,657.80, carried higher by a sector-wide rebound rather than any company-specific announcement. The advance left the Dutch lithography giant just 5.2% shy of its 52-week peak.
The rally in semiconductor equipment names drew strength from two directions. Weaker U.S. employment data eased rate worries across financial markets, while investors continued rotating capital into artificial intelligence infrastructure. Reuters reported that the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 3.1%, with chipmakers and their suppliers leading gains on U.S. exchanges.
Micron Technology's strong quarterly results and upbeat guidance, released earlier in the week, added fresh momentum. According to Dow Jones, the combination of sustained interest in AI applications and Micron's encouraging numbers gave the entire technology segment a noticeable lift, with European semiconductor stocks among the beneficiaries.
Buyback Program Rolls On
Away from the trading floor, ASML kept up its existing share repurchase program. The company disclosed transactions covering the trading week of September 21 to 25, during which it bought back a total of 165,200 of its own shares for EUR 248,163,188.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?
The daily breakdown shows the pace accelerating through the week: 25,500 shares on September 21, followed by 29,000 on September 22 and 43,000 on September 23. Activity peaked on September 24 with 57,700 shares, before tapering to 10,000 shares on September 25. Through these steady purchases, the company is gradually reducing the number of shares in free float.
Europe's Chip Gap in Focus
While the sector mood has brightened, the picture on ASML's home continent remains a concern. Frank Heemskerk, Executive Vice President at ASML, recently pointed to the lack of demand in Europe, citing weak investment and the absence of new fab construction. He called for political measures to specifically stimulate demand for European chip production.
Investors are now turning their attention back to the company's underlying performance after the recent share price recovery. ASML has confirmed it will publish its third-quarter 2026 financial results on October 14, 2026, with management hosting an investor conference the same day to discuss business developments and the outlook ahead. That date should reveal how far the momentum in the AI segment is actually translating into order intake and deliveries.
Drone Test at Veldhoven Headquarters
Separately, the company confirmed a temporary drone deployment over its factory grounds in Veldhoven. ASML described it as a security test running until October 30, and said all required regulatory permits for the trial are in place.
