Aryzta to Shut Gerolzhofen Bakery Plant, Putting Up to 300 Jobs in Doubt
Published on 11/02/2026 at 13:41 | Editorial boerse-global.deAryzta has confirmed it intends to close its Hiestand production site in Gerolzhofen, a move that places between 250 and 300 jobs at risk in the Lower Franconian town. The bakery group announced the plan on 26 October 2026.
Under the proposal, manufacturing would be consolidated at the company's Eisleben facility. For the workforce in Gerolzhofen, the announcement opens a period of deep uncertainty over whether their employment will continue.
Employment lawyers say staff should not rush into any decisions while the picture is still forming. Their first piece of advice is to stay calm and establish exactly where each employee stands legally — starting with a close reading of the employment contract, any supplementary agreements and recent payslips.
Checking individual legal protection cover early is equally important, the specialists add. Above all, employees are urged to resist pressure if management presents termination agreements, known in Germany as Aufhebungsverträge. Nothing should be signed before qualified legal advice has been obtained, since such an agreement typically carries serious consequences for statutory entitlements and protective rights.
Relocation Is Not Automatic
With production earmarked for Eisleben, the question of transfers is moving to the foreground for many in Gerolzhofen. Lawyers stress that moving an employee to another site is bound by strict legal requirements. The first step is to establish which workplace the contract actually names, and whether it contains a valid clause allowing relocation.
Even where such a clause exists, an employer cannot order a transfer at will. The company is legally obliged to give proper weight to each employee's personal circumstances.
That includes childcare, the care of relatives, health considerations and the actual distance to the new place of work. Every transfer is also subject to the statutory co-determination rights of the works council, which the employer must respect when carrying out such measures.
