Arafura Rare Earths has secured offtake agreements covering 1,000 tonnes of the NdPr rare earth mix, according to Reuters, giving the Australian developer a firm demand-side anchor just as its flagship Nolans project in the Northern Territory edges toward construction.

The contracts matter because they arrive before a single tonne has been produced. NdPr — the neodymium-praseodymium blend used in the magnets that drive electric motors and wind turbines — sits at the center of a market China has long dominated, and Arafura has now demonstrated it can find buyers in that environment.

A September Start, an October Reckoning

Management confirmed the timeline alongside its financial results for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2026. Construction at the A$1.6 billion project is slated to kick off in September 2026, with the contractual close of project financing expected in October. Strategic share subscriptions are due to settle that same month. Practical completion of the plant is targeted for the end of 2029, following a build phase of roughly 37 months.

Those dates had already been flagged by the company about a week earlier when it released its annual numbers, so the schedule itself is not new. What is new is the commercial validation from the offtake side.

The backdrop adds urgency. Reuters reported that Chinese rare earth suppliers are holding back shipments to the United States for fear of retaliatory measures from Beijing — a dynamic that sharpens the strategic value of non-Chinese supply sources such as Nolans and could strengthen Arafura's hand in future contract talks.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Arafura Rare Earths?

Losses Widen as the Waiting Game Drags On

The annual report laid bare the cost of the long runway. Arafura booked a larger loss for the year than in the prior period, even as other income rose. For a company still building out production capacity — and whose main revenue stream will not flow until Nolans is finished — a widening shortfall is hardly a shock. It does, however, underscore how tightly the equity story is tethered to hitting the next financing milestones.

October now looms as the pivotal month. Only the contractual close of project financing and the settlement of strategic shareholdings will show whether the ambitious schedule — build start in September, completion by late 2029 — can actually hold. Any slippage would send an immediate signal to capital markets, given that the project has been priced largely on the expectation of a smooth handover from planning to construction.

Performance Rights Lapse Adds to the Noise

Roughly two weeks ago, close to 13.96 million performance rights lapsed after their conditions went unmet by August 31. The event is part of the company's ongoing remuneration structure and, on its own, is not an operational red flag — but it slots into a run of recent news that has weighed on the share price.

The stock has felt that pressure. It currently trades at EUR 0.1051, according to one reading, and at EUR 0.1074 in another, having shed around 20 percent over 30 days. That leaves it well below its 200-day moving average of EUR 0.1555, a sign of persistent medium-term weakness. The gap to its 52-week high of EUR 0.3100, reached last October, now stands at 65 percent — a measure of how far expectations for the project have dimmed since then.

The market appears to be weighting the financing question more heavily than operational wins like the new offtake deals. Since the project financing close became a talking point roughly two weeks ago, the shares have lost about 11.0 percent, while the performance rights lapse knocked 17.6 percent off the stock.

What Investors Are Watching

The 1,000-tonne NdPr offtake agreements are one piece of a larger puzzle: proof that Arafura can line up customers in a China-dominated market before production even starts. Whether the October financing close materializes remains the decisive test. Only then is the market likely to start pricing the company's fundamental progress back into the share price.
