Arafura Rare Earths Nears the Starting Line as Nolans Secures Full $1.6B Funding
Published on 08/14/2026 at 04:31 | Redaktion boerse-global.deThe road to construction at Arafura Rare Earths' Nolans project has been paved with milestones, and the latest one carries particular weight. Speaking at the Diggers & Dealers Mining Forum in Kalgoorlie, the company confirmed that the rare earths development is now fully financed, with roughly US$1.6 billion in place and a ground-breaking date set for next month.
That confirmation marks the culmination of a multi-stage funding strategy that began taking shape months earlier. In May, Arafura completed a two-tranche institutional placement worth A$350 million at A$0.26 per share — a raise that laid the groundwork for the full project financing now secured. The first tranche, settled at the end of May, brought in approximately A$175.5 million, while the second, worth around A$174.5 million, remained subject to shareholder approval. Hancock Prospecting chipped in A$85 million and is set to hold a 17.5 percent stake once the transaction closes. In July, the company issued 675,126,287 new shares as the first tranche of that placement.
For investors, the significance of full project financing extends beyond the headline figure. A completely funded development removes the specter of further dilution through additional capital raises and provides certainty around the construction timeline — a factor that likely carried more weight than the day's share price action. The equity settled Thursday at €0.1347, down 4.3 percent on the session, though the weekly picture tells a different story with a 9.2 percent gain. The stock remains 57 percent below its 52-week high of €0.3100, reached on October 13, with annualized volatility of 54 percent over 30 days underscoring just how choppy trading has been. Market capitalization stands at roughly €799.52 million.
The financing milestone builds on a series of preparatory steps that have de-risked the path to production. In May, the board gave the final investment decision the green light, following binding cornerstone subscription agreements with Export Finance Australia, the National Reconstruction Fund Corporation and Germany's raw materials fund, alongside a binding offtake term sheet with Traxys. Together, the binding offtake agreements cover 93 percent of the targeted capacity — a level of commitment that provides meaningful revenue visibility as construction gets underway.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Arafura Rare Earths?
CEO Darryl Cuzzubbo used the Kalgoorlie platform to walk delegates through the transition from development into the construction phase, with the formal start targeted for September, subject to remaining financing milestones and approvals. The company has been working with engineering partner Hatch on a detailed construction-readiness schedule aimed at hitting that date. The June update to the project's economics continues to rest on unchanged key assumptions, according to the company.
Alongside the funding and construction news, Arafura filed an application for the ASX listing of newly issued employee shares — a minor administrative matter that nonetheless signals business as usual during a pivotal stretch. There is also a change coming at the executive level: Angela Bigg steps into the chief financial officer role on August 31, succeeding Peter Sherrington, who is retiring after nearly 18 years with the company. Bigg started in mid-July, and Sherrington remains on board through the end of October to manage the handover.
The stock's trajectory tells a story of its own. On the day of the Diggers & Dealers presentation, shares slipped 2.8 percent to €0.1368, just below the prior close of €0.1407. The weekly gain of 16 percent masks a more sobering monthly decline of 0.9 percent, and the stock is down 9.7 percent year to date. At roughly 56 percent below the 52-week high from October 13 and 40 percent above the 52-week low from August 26 of the prior year, the shares continue to trade in a wide band as the market weighs project execution risk against the now-secured funding base.
With the balance sheet fully funded and construction set to begin within weeks, the focus shifts to execution. Whether the build proceeds on schedule and how the share price responds to the narrowing gap to its yearly peak will likely determine the next chapter for Arafura — and for the investors who have ridden the volatility to this point.
