Arafura Rare Earths Crosses the Final Hurdle: Nolans Construction Set to Begin Next Month
Published on 08/12/2026 at 18:52 | Redaktion boerse-global.deThe long march from feasibility study to shovels in the ground is nearly over for Arafura Rare Earths. With the final investment decision now locked in and roughly US$1.6 billion in project financing assembled, the company is preparing to break ground on its Nolans rare earths project in Australia's Northern Territory within weeks.
A Funding Stack Built to Last
The capital structure underpinning Nolans combines more than US$1 billion in debt with up to US$900 million in equity. Arafura's June-quarter operational update showed the strength of that equity component: an institutional placement raised A$350 million, while a share purchase plan added another A$11.5 million. As of June 30, the company held A$723 million in cash, term deposits and liquid assets combined.
Cornerstone agreements with Export Finance Australia and a German raw materials fund remain in progress, adding further weight to the project's financial foundations. The company presented these details at the Diggers & Dealers mining conference, where it confirmed the FID had been reached.
From Planning to Production
September marks the official start of construction, with substantial earthworks scheduled to follow in the fourth quarter. The Northern Territory government has already designated Nolans as a "Significant Project" under newly enacted legislation — a status that brings additional regulatory support and signals political backing for the development.
On the offtake side, Arafura has signed binding agreements with Traxys North America and an Indian partner, each covering 500 tonnes of NdPr oxide per year. These contracts give the project a revenue runway before the first tonne is even mined.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Arafura Rare Earths?
There is also a change coming to the executive suite: Angela Bigg will step in as chief financial officer, succeeding Peter Sherrington, who has tendered his resignation.
A Sector Gathering Momentum
Arafura is far from alone in capturing investor attention. Alongside Lynas Rare Earths, Australian Strategic Materials and Iluka Resources, it ranks among the Australian rare earths names currently drawing heightened interest. Smaller explorers such as Dreadnought Resources and MTM Critical Metals are also being watched as potential catalysts for the next phase of sector discussion.
The tailwinds extend well beyond Australia. In early August, the US government announced a package exceeding US$2 billion for mining and mineral projects at a State Department roundtable, supplemented by more than US$180 million for education and workforce initiatives. Such signals reinforce expectations that buyers outside China will increasingly pursue alternative rare earth supply chains — a dynamic that plays directly into projects like Nolans.
The competitive landscape is thickening too. Australian Rare Earths has commenced pilot processing at the ANSTO facility in Sydney, St George Mining reported a significantly expanded resource at its Araxá project in Brazil, and ReElement Technologies is advancing a germanium production line in the US. NioCorp, meanwhile, pointed to an updated feasibility study for its Elk Creek project showing a pre-tax net present value of US$4.1 billion.
Market Remains Cautious Despite Progress
The share price reaction tells a more measured story. The stock traded at €0.1365 on Wednesday, up 1.9 percent from the prior close of €0.1340. The seven-day gain stands at 15 percent, though the equity still sits 56 percent below its 52-week high of €0.3100, set on October 13, 2025.
Tuesday's session saw the shares advance 4.04 percent, and the weekly gain was 12.61 percent — a short-term recovery that masks a more sobering picture. The stock remains down 11.55 percent year-to-date, and the annualized 30-day volatility of over 52 percent underscores just how jittery trading in this name remains.
For investors, the September groundbreaking will be the clearest signal yet that Nolans is moving from paper to production. Whether that translates into sustained share price momentum is another question entirely — but the project itself has never been closer to becoming a reality.
