AppLovin Slips Toward 52-Week Low as Wells Fargo Questions Pixel Quality and Unity Feud Escalates

AppLovin shares came under heavy selling pressure on Friday, closing down 5.0% at EUR 237.85. The retreat left the stock hovering just 0.7% above its 52-week low of EUR 236.15 — a threshold that now looms as the next test for a company grappling with both a skeptical analyst call and an increasingly bitter dispute with its closest rival.
Wells Fargo Casts Doubt on E-Commerce Pixel Momentum
The immediate trigger for Friday's decline was a downbeat assessment from Wells Fargo, which questioned whether the recent uptick in merchant pixel installations genuinely signals meaningful demand in the e-commerce space. After examining the newly onboarded merchant pages, the analysts found that many of these sites generate little to no measurable traffic. On that basis, Wells Fargo sees no real acceleration in growth before 2027.
The bank had already maintained its "Equal Weight" rating on Wednesday, keeping a $325 price target intact while flagging concerns about the quality of recent growth in e-commerce pixel installations. The hoped-for momentum in AppLovin's new business segment, in the analysts' view, has yet to materialize.
Unity's Rising Ad Momentum Adds Another Layer of Risk
Fundamental doubts are only part of the story. Wedbush analyst Alicia Reese pointed on Friday to a noticeable shift in the balance of power within the advertising market, noting that rival Unity's ad business is gaining traction. Should Unity bid more aggressively in auctions on AppLovin's MAX mediation platform, the so-called take rate — AppLovin's cut of transactions — could face meaningful erosion. Reese raised the point in a market commentary without issuing a new rating or price target.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Applovin?
For AppLovin, the scenario strikes at the heart of its business model. Can an auction platform defend its earning power when a strengthening competitor gains deep visibility into bidding dynamics?
Courtroom Setback, Arbitration Ahead
The conflict centers on technical analytics tools. According to media reports, AppLovin sought court-ordered restrictions against Unity before the Superior Court of California in San Francisco, specifically targeting Unity's Ad Quality Software Development Kit. AppLovin wanted to bar its competitor from collecting and exploiting data from its advertising business through that tool.
A judge rejected AppLovin's request for a preliminary injunction against the Ad Quality SDK — a procedural defeat that nonetheless thrust the strategic risks into sharp relief. The ruling addressed only interim emergency relief and made no determination on the merits of the claims, which will proceed through arbitration.
That arbitration was formally initiated by AppLovin on September 27. The company alleges breach of contract and misappropriation of trade secrets, with the dispute rooted in data captured via Unity's ad quality SDK. AppLovin laid out its position in a blog post on Wednesday, arguing that ad quality verification tools should be used to detect questionable advertising — not to harvest user-level data from other networks.
A Structural Dilemma at the Heart of the Platform Model
The legal battle exposes a deeper tension. Platforms thrive on openness to advertising partners, yet must simultaneously protect their own data stores. Failing to strike that balance risks a creeping loss of pricing power for AppLovin.
Investors appear to be weighing fears of market share losses and margin pressure more heavily than the purely legal setback. With the latest declines, the stock is trading dangerously close to its 52-week low. Until concrete evidence emerges that e-commerce can contribute meaningfully to the business, sentiment around the advertising specialist is likely to remain strained — and the defense of margins in the auction business will stay the key metric to watch in the months ahead.
