The arithmetic of disappointment is rarely forgiving, but AppLovin's current predicament carries an unusual twist: the company beat on earnings, grew revenue by more than half, and still finds its stock trading barely above a 52-week low. At roughly 270–274 euros, the shares sit just 4 percent above the trough of 263.40 euros touched in mid-August, having shed 54 percent of their value since January and 31 percent in the past month alone.

The trigger for this sell-off was a familiar one in growth investing — a guidance miss. When AppLovin reported second-quarter results on August 5, revenue climbed 53 percent to $1.924 billion, yet that figure came in roughly $31 million shy of the $1.955 billion consensus. It marked the first time the company had missed revenue expectations since going public. The third-quarter outlook of $2.075 billion at the midpoint also landed marginally below the $2.08 billion analysts had penciled in.

Management's explanation pointed to delays in improving the AI models that power user acquisition on its advertising platform. That admission has opened a far more consequential debate: whether the engine that drove AppLovin's meteoric rise — the AXON advertising technology — is hitting a ceiling, or simply going through a fixable rough patch.

A Question of Self-Learning vs. Manual Tuning

The most damaging detail to emerge from the post-earnings analyst scramble concerns how the recent model improvements were achieved. Bank of America, which downgraded the stock from "Buy" to "Neutral" on August 11 and cut its price target to $400 from $430, argued that second-quarter gains were driven primarily by engineer-led adjustments to gaming models rather than by self-learning systems. That distinction matters enormously: if AXON's improvements require hands-on intervention rather than algorithmic iteration, the scalability thesis that justified the stock's premium comes into question.

The bank subsequently slashed its 2027 revenue growth forecast to 23 percent from 31 percent and trimmed its EBITDA estimate to $8.3 billion from $9 billion. Wells Fargo, weighing in on August 6, framed the challenge in terms of market saturation, noting that AppLovin already controls roughly half of all user acquisition spending in mobile gaming — a position that leaves little room for share gains and makes future growth increasingly dependent on the overall market's expansion.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Applovin?

BTIG added its voice on Thursday, cutting its price target to $408 from $574 while maintaining a "Buy" rating. The move followed an investor meeting at AppLovin's Palo Alto headquarters, where CEO Adam Foroughi, CFO Matt Stumpf, and IR head David Hsiao discussed the strategic restructuring of the commerce division and the gaming segment's second-quarter weakness.

The Fundamentals That Haven't Cracked

For all the bearish noise, the underlying financials remain robust. Net income rose 55 percent to $1.267 billion, adjusted EBITDA climbed 58 percent to $1.614 billion — a margin of 84 percent — and earnings per share of $3.76 edged past the $3.75 consensus. The company also repurchased 1.1 million Class A shares for $551.3 million during the quarter.

The relative strength index sits at 29, signaling oversold conditions, and the stock's technical position near its 52-week low has split the Street. Needham and Phillip Securities maintained their buy recommendations despite trimming targets, suggesting that at least some analysts view the current price as an overreaction to what may be a temporary setback.

Insider Activity Raises Eyebrows

One data point complicates the bull case. Over the past six months, insiders have sold shares in 400 transactions without a single purchase — a pattern that some investors read as a lack of conviction in a swift recovery. Foroughi alone disposed of roughly 204,000 shares across 113 sales.

Regulatory Overhang Lifts

There is at least one unambiguous positive: the SEC investigation into AXON's data practices, opened in October 2025 following a whistleblower complaint, has been closed without any findings of wrongdoing. Stumpf disclosed the resolution during the earnings call, removing a regulatory overhang that had weighed on sentiment.

What remains is the central question that will determine the stock's trajectory: whether AXON's self-learning components resume delivering improvements in the coming quarters, or whether the manual engineering work that characterized Q2 becomes a permanent feature of the growth model. The third-quarter guidance stands for now, and the actual results will serve as the first concrete test of whether the technical issues are resolved or entrenched. Until then, the stock's fate hinges on whether investors believe AppLovin's growth engine can relearn how to run on its own.
