Applied Digital's Buy Rating Meets a Sector Gripped by Borrowing Costs

Roth resumed Applied Digital at Buy with a $35 target, but shares fell 5.4% as a 50 MW Soluna JV and a $221.0 million quarterly loss frame the funding questions.

A fresh buy recommendation is one thing. Paying for the build-out is another. Applied Digital offered a neat illustration of that gap this week, with the stock giving back ground even as analysts turned positive on the name.

The shares fell 5.4% on the day, following a pre-market decline of 3.8%, after Roth resumed coverage with a Buy rating and a price target of $35. Media reports noted that Applied Digital had traded higher in the immediate wake of the call. The reversal doesn't make the recommendation wrong — it simply shows how little a single bullish note says about the durability of a rebound. An analyst's target is an opinion about value, not value already delivered.

The sector's funding headache came first

The pressure was visible before the rating landed. On Friday, Applied Digital was caught in a broader selloff across AI data-center stocks, with worries about financing costs, leverage and the high-yield bond market weighing on the whole group. One cited drag: a $1.25 billion CoreWeave bond maturing in 2032, whose yield reportedly reached 15%.

That figure says nothing about Applied Digital's own borrowing terms. What it does explain is why the sector's story now runs beyond demand for computing power. Growth can be attractive and financing-intensive at the same time; the two aren't mutually exclusive. AP has reported concerns that rising funding costs could slow or complicate the construction of new data centers — a sector-wide headwind rather than a confirmed, company-specific trigger.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Applied Digital?

A 50 MW plan, with strings attached

The joint venture announced with Soluna Holdings gives that growth story a concrete shape. At the Project Dorothy 3 site in Texas, the partners plan a 50 MW data center for AI and high-performance computing. Applied Digital is to contribute development capital in exchange for a 51% stake; Soluna is to bring land and power-related assets and hold the remaining 49%.

ChronoScale Holdings, majority-owned by Applied Digital, has signed a non-binding letter of intent to lease the facility. Closing is expected by the end of the year — or by the end of 2026, depending on the account — and remains subject to conditions, including approval of tax incentives. "Non-binding" is not a legal footnote here. A letter of intent is not a lease, and an expected closing is still an expectation. Anyone weighing the announcement should keep those gradations in view rather than flattening them into a clean growth narrative.

What the earnings line actually shows

The numbers demand a similarly careful read. For its first fiscal quarter of 2027, Applied Digital reported revenue of $341.9 million and adjusted EBITDA of $64.4 million on October 7. Those figures alone don't settle the profit question: adjusted EBITDA and the result attributable to common shareholders are different lenses. The net loss attributable to common stockholders came to $221.0 million for the quarter, which ended August 31, 2026.

Two other signals cut in the opposite direction. Roth MKM's Buy rating and $35.00 target stand against the troubled sector backdrop. And CEO and Chairman Wes Cummins bought 55,803 common shares at $18.04 apiece on October 16, a purchase disclosed in a mandatory filing. It is a personal investment decision, not a funding commitment for the data center.

The bar for Applied Digital, then, isn't the noise of any single trading session. It is whether planned capacity turns into binding business — and how the cost of financing that capacity shows up in the results. The buy rating offers a positive view. The project's conditions and the loss line supply the questions that go with it.
