Apple's iPhone 18 Pro Teardown Reveals a Repairability Paradox: Cheaper to Open, Costlier to Fix

Apple's latest flagship may be easier to take apart than ever — but that won't stop the bill from climbing. A teardown published by repair specialist REWA Technology on 18 September 2026 exposes a device whose internal layout has been reorganized around a new chip, while official out-of-warranty service charges jump across the board.
The most visible design shift sits up front. Face ID's infrared camera has moved beneath the display, allowing Apple to shrink the Dynamic Island noticeably, with the sensor now tucked into the display's left corner.
A20 Pro chip gets a cooling overhaul
That sensor relocation forced a redesign of the mainboard. The A20 Pro, built on a 2-nanometer process, has been pushed further toward the top of the chassis and now sits on a new thermal pad. It abuts a vapor chamber whose surface area has tripled compared with the iPhone 17 Pro. Apple says the enlarged cooling system delivers up to 40 percent more sustained performance.
The processor carries six CPU cores, seven GPU cores and 2x16 neural cores. Against the A19 Pro, memory bandwidth rises by 50 percent, graphics performance climbs by as much as 40 percent, and AI compute throughput doubles.
Both the NAND storage and the power management chip are embedded between layers of the mainboard. Apple also confirmed the use of its in-house C2 modem, which draws 15 percent less power than the C1X. Wireless duties fall to the N1 chip, supporting Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and the Thread radio standard.
Battery capacity splits by region
Around back, the main camera pairs a 48-megapixel sensor with a variable aperture offering intermediate stops at f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0. A 60W AVS power adapter can bring the battery to 50 percent in roughly 15 minutes.
Capacity depends on which chassis variant buyers receive. The European model with a physical SIM slot is rated at 4,056 mAh — a 1.7 percent gain over the iPhone 17 Pro's 3,988 mAh. The iPhone 18 Pro Max reaches 5,391 mAh, about 11.8 percent more than its predecessor's 4,823 mAh.
Unofficial figures circulating for versions without a physical card slot put those cells at 4,288 mAh and 5,567 mAh respectively, which would translate into up to two extra hours of video playback.
Because the Pro Max's energy store exceeds 20 watt-hours, a firmware function caps capacity below that threshold before the device leaves the factory. A dedicated menu option handles later repairs and returns, and deactivating it can be blocked for up to 14 days depending on the circumstances.
Mainboard scores top marks, display and battery lag
REWA's disassembly lays bare sharp disparities in how easily individual components can be reached. The mainboard earns a perfect 5 out of 5, and the camera module manages 4 out of 5. Display and battery, by contrast, each score just 2 out of 5.
Alongside the reworked internals, official service pricing outside warranty is heading upward. In Germany, a battery replacement rises 10.37 percent from 135 euros to 149 euros; in the United States, the charge moves to 129 US dollars from 119 US dollars.
A cracked display on the Pro Max costs 489 euros, up marginally from 488.99 euros. Repairs for other damage climb to 999 euros on the iPhone 18 Pro (previously 899 euros) and 1,059 euros on the Pro Max (previously 955 euros). Those flat rates will now also apply to the corresponding previous-generation models.
AppleCare+ now runs at 15.99 euros per month, up from 14.99 euros. Customers already under contract keep free battery swaps once capacity drops below 80 percent, with display replacements billed at 29 euros.
