ams-OSRAM shares slid after Meta Connect brought no microLED AR timeline, but Jefferies lifted its target on VCSEL optical connectivity for AI data centers.

A pair of down days has taken some froth out of ams-OSRAM. After a double-digit slide on Thursday, the Austrian chipmaker's shares gave up another 4.5% yesterday to close at EUR 21.30, with the trigger coming not from the company's own books but from Meta's developer gathering, Meta Connect, where executives stopped short of unveiling a microLED smart glasses product or committing to a firm timeline for augmented-reality hardware.

For traders who had positioned for a swift consumer rollout of the display technology, the absence of hard dates landed as a letdown — and the disappointment showed up first on the Swiss exchange, where speculative AR enthusiasm had been doing much of the heavy lifting in prior sessions.

A Correction That Was Arguably Overdue

The pullback is less surprising than the run-up that preceded it. Euphoria around microLED eyewear had gotten ahead of what the industrial supply chain can realistically deliver; expecting a large corporation to shepherd a technically demanding display solution from laboratory to mass production overnight underestimates the manufacturing hurdles involved. Once concrete signals failed to materialize, short-horizon investors taking profits was the predictable outcome of stretched expectations.

What that framing risks obscuring, however, is the catalyst that had lifted the stock before this setback: a solution for optical connectivity that sparked substantial demand.

Data Centers, Not Consumer Gadgets, Are the Real Story

That business carries far more substance than vague consumer-electronics fantasies. On Wednesday, Jefferies responded to the technological progress by raising its price target to CHF 25.50 from CHF 21.00 while keeping a Buy rating. The analysts pointed to the new VCSEL laser solution for optical connectivity as the rationale — a step that suggests ams-OSRAM has struck a nerve in the fast-moving data-center infrastructure market.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ams-OSRAM?

Refocusing on optical components for artificial intelligence reshapes the company's risk profile at a fundamental level. Rather than tying its fortunes to the product cycles of individual technology giants, it now addresses structural demand driven by the global buildout of computing capacity.

The Operating Base Looks Firmer Than the Tape Suggests

Away from the data-center narrative, the core business is showing resilience of its own. For the second quarter of 2026, ams-OSRAM reported revenue of EUR 805 million, beating the consensus estimate, while the adjusted EBITDA margin of 16.9% also came in ahead of market expectations.

Management guided for third-quarter 2026 revenue of between EUR 770 million and EUR 870 million, with an adjusted operating margin expected to land around 16%. The company also used the Automechanika Frankfurt trade fair to present its automotive accessories portfolio, including LED retrofit solutions. Since the start of the year, the stock is still up 153%.

Deleveraging and a Photonics Pipeline in Parallel

Optimism about the turnaround rests on the strategic pivot toward high-margin light and photonics solutions. More than a month ago, the company completed the sale of its non-optical sensor business to Infineon, a transaction that brought in fresh funds now earmarked for balance-sheet strengthening.

To that end, ams-OSRAM announced a public tender offer of EUR 120 million to EUR 150 million for convertible bonds and senior notes, to be executed within 120 days of the sale's closing. The scheduled debt reduction eases pressure on the balance sheet and lowers future interest costs. At the same time, the company is opening growth avenues beyond the cyclical smartphone market: at the ECOC specialist conference in Málaga, it plans to demonstrate a plug-based multicore fiber solution together with partner BizLink. Should ams-OSRAM establish itself as a supplier of optical connections for AI infrastructure, that opens considerable revenue potential at high value-add.

Where the Risk Sits

Caution is still warranted. Meta's lack of tangible AR announcements makes plain how distant the mass market for microLED-based data glasses remains — meaning meaningful revenue from that segment could take longer to arrive than optimistic observers had hoped. The restructuring exacts its own toll as well: divestitures shrink the revenue base in the near term, while one-off effects and portfolio measures continue to weigh on the full-year figures.

ams-OSRAM at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

If the new photonics products for AI applications monetize more slowly than hoped, a phase of stagnation looms, and market participants would need to adjust their earnings expectations. A revaluation could quickly erode recent valuation gains should the core business run into cyclical headwinds.

The November Test

For investors, the picture narrows to a straightforward trade-off. As long as the planned bond buyback reduces leverage, the recovery story stays broadly intact, and hitting operating targets signals to the market that the transformation is proceeding on schedule despite industry turbulence. Should profitability instead deteriorate durably because of higher transition costs, the stock faces an extension of its recent losses, with doubts about the earnings power of the realignment taking over.

The decisive variable between now and then is how quickly management can convert announced partnerships into binding orders. The recent decline in the wake of Meta Connect reads less like a trend reversal than a healthy clearing of speculative air around near-term microLED dreams — leaving behind a semiconductor maker that is stabilizing its margins and has built a credible bridge into the AI hardware market through optical VCSEL connectivity.
