ams-OSRAM Rides a 20% Surge as AI Data-Center Lasers Steal the Show
Published on 09/21/2026 at 15:20 | Editorial boerse-global.deA single product unveiling was enough to send ams-OSRAM shares flying on Monday. The Austrian-German chipmaker introduced a thin-film VCSEL platform built for the breakneck data flows inside artificial-intelligence server farms, and investors responded with gusto — the stock jumped 20% to EUR 21.80 during the session.
At the heart of the announcement sit vertically emitting laser structures that push optical signals at a flawless 32 Gbit/s in NRZ operation. According to the company, the system sips power at roughly 0.25 pJ/bit, a figure that promises to slash the electricity bill for moving data within data centers. Stress testing backed up the pitch: more than 2,000 hours of operation without a single failure, even under elevated junction temperatures and overload conditions.
The engineering leans on arrays in the 850-nanometer wavelength range, spaced just 25 micrometers apart with integrated silicon vias. It is a "wide-and-slow" design philosophy — rather than redlining individual channels, the architecture spreads the signal across a multitude of parallel, low-energy lanes.
A Live Demo in Málaga, With BizLink Along for the Ride
Proof of concept is on display at ECOC in Málaga, where ams-OSRAM is teaming up with connector specialist BizLink to show a plug-based multicore fiber solution. The demonstrations are closed-door, reserved for select industry partners. ams-OSRAM supplies the optical emitters, while BizLink handles fiber-array assembly and optical packaging.
Early street reaction has been warm. UBS analysts called the VCSEL offering a promising route for fiber-optic connectivity, while Jefferies pointed to the group's attractive strategic positioning in the global semiconductor arena, underpinned by its work on advanced micro-lasers.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ams-OSRAM?
What management has not provided is a commercial roadmap. CEO Aldo Kamper and his team have yet to name launch dates, order sizes, or projected revenue contributions. Further out, the company is developing integrated 3D photonics stacks that pack laser diodes, photodetectors, and electronic control circuits into tight quarters.
Robotics Push Adds a Second Growth Narrative
The data-center breakthrough is not the only front where ams-OSRAM is angling for new turf. Media reports indicate the group is positioning a novel optical force-sensor technology squarely at robot hands, offering a precise alternative to the piezoelectric components that currently dominate the field. As industrial robots demand ever-finer gripping and tactile capabilities, the company sees an opening to grab share in a fast-expanding automation niche.
That ambition slots into a broader strategic overhaul. Dedicated Digital Photonics units were set up to speed and scale the development pipeline, covering commercialization of augmented-reality glasses and optical connections. In the second quarter, the company locked in design wins worth a record EUR 1.6 billion in that arena.
Divestments Fund the Photonics Bet
Management is simultaneously clearing out non-core assets to free up cash and pay down debt. The sale of the non-optical analog and mixed-signal sensor business to Infineon for EUR 570 million in cash closed more than a month ago. In May, ams-OSRAM agreed to offload its CMOS image-sensor operations to Indie Semiconductors. Roughly two weeks ago came a definitive deal to sell the tungsten and molybdenum production site in Schwabmünchen to The Elmet Group, with completion targeted for the first quarter of 2027.
The stock has been on a tear: Friday's close of EUR 18.05 marked a 2.6% gain, extending a recovery that has lifted the shares 114% since the start of the year.
Autos and Lighting Still Carry the Load
Alongside the new frontiers, the business continues to lean on automotive applications and its traditional lighting arm. At the Automechanika Frankfurt trade fair, the company recently showcased aftermarket solutions, including the NIGHT BREAKER LED SMART ECE H11 retrofit lamp, which earned a nomination for the event's innovation award.
Three weeks ago, ams-OSRAM reported second-quarter revenue of EUR 805 million and adjusted EBITDA of EUR 136 million. For the third quarter, management is guiding toward sales of EUR 770 million to EUR 870 million with an adjusted operating margin of around 16%. Opening up robotics markets shows how the group intends to wring broader value from the photonics expertise that remains at its core.
