Almonty: Two Price Targets, Two Different Questions

When two research houses look at the same tungsten miner and land on price targets 14 dollars apart, the gap itself is the story. Oppenheimer's Ian Zaffino cut his Almonty target to US$19 from US$25 on Thursday, while D.A. Davidson reaffirmed its US$33 target on October 12 following conversations with company management. Both houses remain bullish. What separates them is not conviction but methodology — and understanding that distinction matters more than picking the higher number.

A Yardstick Cut, Not a Forecast Downgrade

Zaffino's reduction rests on lower valuation multiples among comparable companies, according to media reports. That is a recalibration of the measuring stick applied to Almonty's earnings, not a verdict that the business itself has deteriorated. His "Outperform" rating survived the cut intact.

The distinction is easy to blur. A compressed peer multiple says something about how the market is pricing similar assets; it says nothing about whether ore is leaving the ground on schedule. Investors who read the lower target as a warning about operations are reading it wrong. Equally, those who wave it away because the rating stayed positive are missing how tightly any price target is tethered to the valuation environment around it.

D.A. Davidson's move ran along a different track entirely. The firm kept its US$33 target and Buy rating but revised its revenue and adjusted EBITDA estimates for 2026 and 2027. The drivers: timing shifts within the project portfolio and updated near-term price assumptions. A static target, in other words, conceals assumptions that were anything but static.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Almonty?

The Price Behind the Numbers

Those revised assumptions did not emerge in a vacuum. Reporting on the Oppenheimer note cited tungsten/APT prices that had slipped to US$2,700 per MTU. That backdrop argues against any reading of Almonty that focuses solely on project milestones while ignoring what the market is paying for the finished product.

Project progress and price assumptions cannot be assessed independently of one another, which is precisely why the company's next scheduled disclosure carries weight.

Three Dates on the Calendar

Almonty announced on Tuesday an investor day webcast for October 19, 2026, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Eastern. The agenda pairs an overview of the tungsten market with operational updates on individual mines — a combination that lets investors separate business performance from shifts in stock market valuation.

Two nearer-term operational markers sit alongside it. In an October 11 newsletter, CEO Lewis Black said shipments from Rwanda are expected to exceed 100 tonnes per month starting in November. For Sangdong, he named October 24 as the planned date for the first commercial delivery. Both are company expectations rather than confirmed volumes — a concrete date makes progress verifiable without eliminating execution risk.

What Friday's Tape Does Not Say

Almonty shares posted a daily move of -2.7% on Friday. Attributing that dip directly to the target cut claims more than the evidence supports; so does the reverse inference that positive analyst coverage somehow de-risks the operational outlook. Price action, valuation models and actual business progress operate on separate planes.

The next real test for Almonty is not which house prints the more attractive target. It is whether the investor day and the promised shipments translate announcements into demonstrable results. The bullish ratings are a signal of confidence. Verifiable output will carry more weight.
