Almonty: Sangdong's Ramp-Up, a Booked Cargo, and a Tungsten Price 71% Off Its Peak

Almonty's Sangdong mine has started producing and a first shipment is booked, but tungsten prices have fallen 71.3% from March highs, pressuring the stock.

Almonty Industries is asking investors to hold two ideas in their heads at once. The first is that its Sangdong mine is finally moving — production has started, a first shipment is booked, and a second expansion phase is under way. The second is that none of that guarantees a warm reception in the market where the tungsten actually gets sold.

The stock's softness this week captures the tension. Shares were down 3.7% on the day, with pre-market trading showing a 3.6% decline. Neither figure comes with a confirmed company-specific trigger, so the weakness is best read as background pressure from the commodity side and revised delivery assumptions rather than a clean reaction to a single news item.

The price backdrop has deteriorated sharply

Chinese pricing for 65% wolframite concentrate settled at 302,000 yuan per standard tonne on October 15, according to Shanghai Metals Market. That marks a slide of 71.3% from the mid-March high, and a drop of RMB 75,000 per standard tonne within the month alone.

The causes are familiar ones for a commodity in retreat: soft demand from downstream industries, bloated inventories, and heavier selling. For Almonty, this is more than an unhelpful backdrop to a single mine announcement. It describes a market where extra supply capacity does not automatically meet extra willingness to buy. Progress at Sangdong and a recovery in tungsten are two separate stories, and treating one as proof of the other would be a mistake.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Almonty?

A ramp-up measured in weeks, not a finished state

At Monday's investor day, management said Sangdong shipments were being prepared and put the timeline to reach design capacity at "the next 60 days." That language describes an ongoing ramp-up, not a completed one.

Stifel responded on Tuesday by trimming its price target to US$21 from US$25 while keeping its Buy rating. The brokerage revised its delivery assumptions for both the first and second phases of Sangdong. The reasoning matters more than the headline number: even with an unchanged positive view on the company, a later start to shipments can move the valuation. A successful ramp-up would resolve the delivery question, but it would not fix weak commodity demand.

Stifel also characterized the investor day as free of groundbreaking news — a useful reminder that the combination of a lower target and a retained Buy is a recalibration, not a reversal of sentiment.

What the paid-for research adds

A report published yesterday by Diamond Equity Research noted a first Sangdong cargo booked for October 24, 2026, and kept its illustrative equity value at US$20.00 per share. Almonty pays the firm for its research services, a detail that belongs alongside any assessment of the report's conclusions.

Almonty at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The same study said the second expansion phase is already running and is slated for completion in 2027, and it reported share buybacks of roughly US$48 million through the end of September. That is a capital allocation move, not evidence of a demand recovery. It also flagged that Sangdong has begun producing tungsten concentrate — an operational milestone, but one that answers a different question than actual shipping does. Concentrate produced and volumes delivered are not the same thing, and a booked vessel is not a completed delivery.

The yardstick that actually matters

For Almonty, the meaningful test is not a single date on the calendar or a single analyst target. It is whether real shipment progress and a more receptive tungsten market arrive together. Until those two developments converge, investors would do well to credit the operational strides without reading them as an all-clear on the economics of the business.
