Almonty has crossed a threshold that eluded it for three decades, yet the market's response has been anything but celebratory. The company's Sangdong mine has shipped its first tungsten container to a customer — the first delivery from the site in more than 30 years — a milestone that CEO Lewis Black confirmed roughly a week ago. Around the same time, two research houses trimmed their price targets while keeping their buy ratings intact. The gap between those two developments is where the real story sits.

A milestone, not a verdict

Black's announcement carries genuine weight: a producing mine and a completed ramp-up are not the same thing, and investors would do well to keep the distinction sharp. Almonty went further at its investor day on 19 October, labelling Sangdong as commercially operational while noting that the second expansion phase is advancing. The company had already described the mine as producing and ramping up in a 7 October statement from Black. Read together, the message is consistent — operations have begun, and development of the site continues.

That nuance matters more than whatever label gets attached to the restart. A first shipment demonstrates that the mine can function; it does not demonstrate that every operational expectation has been met. Nor does it settle the question of what price investors should be willing to pay for the equity.

Two targets, one direction

The analyst community has been voting with its spreadsheets. B. Riley Securities analyst Nick Giles reaffirmed his buy recommendation on Tuesday while cutting his price target to US$20 from US$25, according to media reports. Stifel's Brock Cannon had done much the same on 20 October, restating his buy call and lowering his target to US$21 from US$25. Neither move amounts to a sell signal, and neither represents an unqualified endorsement of earlier expectations. Both halves of each statement deserve attention: the recommendation held, the valuation benchmark came down.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Almonty?

A wider programme, a tougher scorecard

Sangdong is not Almonty's only near-term initiative. At the investor day the company also pointed to additional supply programmes at Los Santos and in Rwanda, which — combined with the second phase at Sangdong — add up to a broader operational agenda. That can be read constructively: Almonty is not staking everything on a single production milestone. It also raises the bar for what counts as proven success. More projects mean more opportunities, not automatically more delivered results, and each programme deserves to be assessed on its own merits.

The pricing backdrop adds another layer of complexity. Black characterised the tungsten market on 7 October as tight even as APT prices had recently slipped — a reminder that scarcity and falling prices can coexist. Almonty separately reported largely stable Western APT prices and firmer indications in the Chinese domestic market, which describes a regionally uneven picture rather than a uniform price surge. Tight supply alone, in other words, does not write a straight-line success story for the stock.

Reading Friday's slide correctly

Mining shares across several commodity segments came under pressure on Friday, a session that AP described as Wall Street's weakest since June amid a deepening selloff in technology names. That is the backdrop, not a proven trigger. Almonty's shares fell 5.1% on the day — a move that sits alongside an operational milestone and still-positive analyst recommendations without offering a clear causal explanation. Deriving a verdict on Sangdong, or a refutation of the company's operating progress, from a single session's decline would be a stretch.

What can be said with confidence is narrower and more useful. Sangdong has achieved a delivery milestone. Two analysts have scaled back their valuation yardsticks in the same direction. The ramp-up, the additional programmes and the regional pricing picture will determine whether the operational progress translates into the kind of value the earlier targets implied. Recognition for the restart is warranted; a blank cheque for every expansion plan is not. The stronger investment case will be built on demonstrated operating progress rather than on repeated tributes to a production start.
