Almonty's Sangdong Ramp-Up: Production Is Real, Revenue Is Still a Promise

DA Davidson keeps Buy and $33 target on Almonty, trims 2026-27 forecasts as Sangdong revenue is expected to start in Q4 2026.

Almonty's first tungsten concentrate from Sangdong is now a matter of record. What the company has not yet produced is a single dollar of booked revenue from it — and that gap sits at the center of the investment case.

The distinction matters because the two are routinely conflated. In a shareholder letter dated September 29, Almonty confirmed the initial output of tungsten concentrate at its South Korean project and outlined progress on the second expansion phase alongside a broader supply strategy spanning South Korea, Europe and Rwanda. That is a genuine industrial milestone. It is not, on its own, evidence that the ramp-up works economically.

DA Davidson Holds the Line, Quietly Redraws the Numbers

The more instructive signal came from DA Davidson, which reaffirmed its buy rating and US$33.00 price target on Almonty while simultaneously revising its revenue and adjusted EBITDA forecasts for 2026 and 2027. The revision followed a meeting with company representatives at the firm's annual industry conference in Nashville.

Notably, the direction and magnitude of those changes were not disclosed, so neither an upgrade nor a downgrade can be read into them. Most assumptions for 2028 were left untouched. What the analyst did make explicit is timing: Sangdong is expected to begin contributing to revenue and EBITDA in the fourth quarter of 2026, with Phases I and II reaching normal utilization in 2027.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Almonty?

Those forecasts carry conditions. Export approval remains pending, and there is a lag between shipping concentrate and recognizing the revenue from it. DA Davidson's 2027 and 2028 estimates also incorporate reprocessing of tailings at Los Santos under the Sandvik contract, while revenue from the Rwanda agreement and the Montana brownfield project is excluded altogether. That selective scope is itself a statement — the firm is not underwriting every project Almonty has flagged.

The Price Environment Sets a Harder Bar

For investors tracking Almonty's production progress, the tungsten price backdrop deserves equal weight. The question is not simply whether Sangdong produces concentrate, but under what pricing conditions that concentrate converts into sales and operating profit. A production milestone describes direction; the economic test lies in execution.

That is precisely why the analyst revision carries more information than a restated buy call. It identifies which levers the expected results actually hang on — schedule and price assumptions — rather than treating the recommendation as self-justifying. A confirmed target is not a reported result, and an unchanged price objective proves nothing about whether the forecast contributions will materialize under real market conditions.

Warrant Gains and the Question of Earnings Quality

A separate concern has been weighing on sentiment. According to media reports, investors attributed Almonty's recent profit increase largely to non-cash gains from warrants and derivatives rather than to mining operations. Such valuation effects say nothing about self-sustaining operating profitability. Reports also point to continuing losses and heavy cash burn, raising the prospect of additional financing needs should the operation fail to stand on its own.

Opinion among analysts is far from uniform. Goldman Sachs rates Almonty Neutral with a $13 price target — a markedly less optimistic view than DA Davidson's.

Almonty at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

What Would Actually Settle the Argument

Almonty's production progress supports the industrial narrative. The softer price environment limits how much that milestone can tell investors right now. Neither yesterday's 6.4% daily decline nor the reaffirmed analyst recommendation answers the earnings question — and the decline should not be read as a verdict on the production news, since no direct causal link can be drawn.

The firmer basis for any valuation would be the delivery of the forecast revenue and EBITDA contributions. Until those arrive, a sober earnings standard serves investors better than advance credit for the expansion.
