Almonty's Sangdong Mill Runs at Full Rate, but Analysts Are Recalibrating the Calendar

Almonty has given investors two very different kinds of news in the space of a few weeks: a mill that is now running at full throughput at its Sangdong mine in South Korea, and a pair of brokerage price-target cuts that have little to do with whether the equipment works. Separating those two threads is the whole exercise.

Start with the plant itself. CEO Lewis Black reported roughly two weeks ago that the grinding circuit was operating at full throughput with recoveries matching expectations, and that underground work on the second expansion phase was already under way. Reuters had carried the same operational detail on October 16. Those disclosures say something about the mine's day-to-day performance rather than about a single shipment leaving the gate.

A cargo three decades in the making

Black also confirmed that a container of tungsten had left Sangdong for a customer — the first such delivery in more than 30 years. It is a genuine operational milestone, and it deserves to be treated as one. What it does not do is underwrite the reliability of the shipments that follow. A first cargo and a dependable ramp-up are separate stages, and collapsing them into one narrative turns an interim achievement into a finished development.

That distinction matters because the analyst community has been making it explicitly. On October 20, Stifel cut its price target to US$21 from US$25 while keeping a Buy rating. The reasoning was not a loss of faith in the project: after the investor day, the firm pushed back its delivery assumptions for Sangdong's first and second expansion phases in its own model. In other words, the technical story held; the timetable moved.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Almonty?

B. Riley Securities followed on October 27, with analyst Nick Giles lowering his target to US$20 from US$25 — again with the Buy rating intact. Two downgrades in the size of the target, zero downgrades in the recommendation. Read together, they are a warning against over-generous expectations rather than a verdict on Almonty. Leaning on the Buy ratings alone would be too comfortable; inferring a rejection of the company from lower targets would be just as lazy.

Seoul listing talk is a separate ledger

Alongside the operating updates, the Maeil Business Newspaper reported on October 26 that Almonty had held discussions about a possible additional listing in South Korea, with Korean Depositary Receipts floated as one route. The Nasdaq listing would be retained under such a plan. This is a capital-markets question, not a substitute for operational proof — an option under discussion, not a completed expansion of the company's exchange footprint.

Keeping the two planes apart is essential. Where the mine sits and how the stock is traded are different questions with different clocks. A second listing would be a development in the equity market; whether the ramp-up holds is settled in the mill and underground.

Almonty at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The takeaway for investors is not "progress or disappointment." It is which stage has actually been reached, and what that stage can reasonably be asked to support. Sangdong has cleared a meaningful hurdle. For the share price, the full distance still counts — and the more convincing the investment case becomes, the more it will rest on sustained, repeatable operation rather than on a single headline, a listing rumor, or an unchanged Buy label.
