Almonty's Sangdong Build-Out: Two Tracks Running at Once, Neither Finished

Almonty says Sangdong has entered production and booked its first concentrate shipment for October 24, while phase two orders are still expected.

Almonty is asking investors to hold two operational ideas in their heads at the same time. The first is that Sangdong has moved into production and is ramping up. The second is that the mine's second expansion phase is advancing in parallel, alongside short-cycle delivery programs in Los Santos and Rwanda. Neither track is complete, and the company's own disclosures make that clear.

According to media reports, CEO Lewis Black told the International Investment Forum on October 7 that Sangdong had entered production and the ramp-up phase. Almonty separately stated that the first concentrate shipment is booked for October 24. Those are two distinct steps, not one: the plant is starting up while the transport carries its own date. A booking is not a completed delivery, and treating the two as a single win gets ahead of the execution.

That distinction matters for how the equity is read. Production status describes progress inside the mine; the shipping date points to the next operational step. They belong together but are not interchangeable. If investors inferred a fully functioning supply chain from the start of production alone, they would be making a leap the company's announcements do not support. What the disclosures describe is a ramp-up with further stages still ahead.

Expansion Orders Are Still Orders

Running alongside the ramp-up is Sangdong's second phase. On October 7, Black said he expected orders for processing plant equipment within four to six weeks. Yesterday the company confirmed in general terms that the second phase is making headway. Expected orders remain expected orders, so the progress update does not dissolve the line between planning and execution. Shareholders are effectively watching two tasks side by side: bringing the started operation up to speed and pushing the build-out forward.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Almonty?

The additional delivery programs in Los Santos and Rwanda widen the frame further. The common thread is the construction of tungsten supply across several operational footholds. These programs are neither a substitute for Sangdong nor proof of its success — Almonty presents them as supplementary measures.

A Softer Price Tape

The pricing backdrop deserves its own reading. Roughly a week ago, Black reported average APT prices of about US$2,700/MTU, down from US$3,050. That development caps how much weight positive operating news can carry: more activity on the ground does not automatically translate into better economics.

It would be a stretch, though, to pin any particular weak trading session on a proven trigger. The operational statements and the price move are possible headwinds, not evidence of what caused a single day's share price action. A credible assessment has to respect that boundary.

What the Investor Day Has to Prove

Almonty has scheduled an investor day for October 19, 2026, promising an overview of the tungsten market and operating reports on the individual mines. The agenda fits the questions the ramp-up raises. The event matters not because it exists, but because of the operational topics attached to it.

The test is whether those briefings allow a clearer read on the ramp-up. A market overview and mine-by-mine reports can help separate operational development from the pricing environment. The gathering itself, however, does not substitute for operational progress, and its announcement alone does not justify a more favorable valuation.

Weighing it all up, caution still beats jumping to conclusions. Almonty has described concrete progress and named a next shipping date. Technical fine-tuning remains part of the reported operating status. The more convincing story would not be the next scheduled date, but the traceable execution of the steps already laid out — and that is the standard the valuation should be measured against.
