Allianz Slips Below Buyback Floor as Leadership Handover Takes Shape

Allianz stock fell to EUR 413.50 after its EUR 2.50 billion buyback ended; Jefferies raised its target to EUR 420 with a Hold rating.

Allianz shares are drifting lower this week, and the reason has as much to do with the mechanics of the order book as with anything happening inside the Munich insurance giant. By Thursday the stock was changing hands at EUR 413.50, a decline of 0.7% on the day, leaving it 9.0% beneath the 52-week high of EUR 454.50 struck at the start of September.

The retreat follows a strong late-summer run, and the immediate trigger is the disappearance of a steady buyer. Allianz SE wrapped up its 2026 share repurchase programme on 22 September, having acquired 6,247,961 of its own shares for a total of roughly EUR 2.50 billion. Those shares are earmarked for cancellation. With the programme complete, the DAX-listed group has stepped out of the market as a constant large-scale purchaser, and press reports suggest the quotation has lost support since then.

Layered on top of that technical shift is a fresh round of industry debate. Worries have been circulating about how far automated AI solutions might disrupt or reshape the traditional insurance distribution model. While the long-term consequences for the earnings power of the major primary insurers remain unresolved, the concerns were enough to prompt some investors to lock in profits after the earlier record levels.

Jefferies Marks Its Valuation to Market

Analysts are not, however, questioning the insurer's fundamental footing. Philip Kett of Jefferies adjusted his assessment to reflect the higher price level, lifting the target for Allianz shares from EUR 325 to EUR 420 on 5 October while keeping the rating at "Hold."

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Allianz?

Investors will get a clearer read on the operating business next month. Allianz SE reports third-quarter 2026 results on 12 November. The company has also scheduled its "Inside Allianz Series #16" event in London for 8 December. Only the upcoming quarterly figures are likely to show how resilient new business and claims ratios actually proved during the late summer.

New Chiefs at Allianz Partners and Allianz Direct

Alongside the market moves, the group is setting its leadership lineup for the coming months. Philipp Kroetz moves from Allianz Direct to Allianz Partners on 1 November, taking over as CEO there, while Laurent Floquet steps up to lead Allianz Direct as its chief executive. At group level the transition is already dated: Tomas Kunzmann joins the board of Allianz SE on 1 January 2027.

A handover is also coming in German distribution. According to media reports, Sören Kupke is to take charge of sales at Allianz Leben on 1 January 2027, adding responsibility for broker distribution at Allianz Private Krankenversicherungs-AG. He succeeds Thomas Wiesemann, who retires on 31 December.

Court Ruling and Wealth Study Round Out the News Flow

Separately, Allianz Versicherungs-AG flagged the legal ground rules facing motorists. Following a Federal Court of Justice ruling on 9 September concerning workshop risk in comprehensive cover, policyholders need to be aware that they may be left bearing the cost of overpriced or unnecessary repair work.

The group also published the 17th edition of its Global Wealth Report, which examines the asset and debt position of private households across nearly 60 countries.

No negative business news has emerged from within the company recently, according to media reports; earlier share price declines were attributed instead to profit-taking after previous gains. The 12 November interim report remains the key checkpoint. In pre-market trading the stock stood at EUR 416.70, about 8.3% below its 52-week high of EUR 454.50.
