The Munich-based insurer has spent the past few weeks hammering home a single message: the record numbers are real, and the 2026 targets are within reach. A third investor communication in as many weeks, published Wednesday under the headline "We are thinking too narrowly about solutions," leaned once again on the second-quarter results unveiled on 7 August — an operating profit of €4.9 billion and a total business volume of €98.6 billion for the first half, alongside a half-year operating result of €9.39 billion.

What the latest note glosses over, however, is that the headline strength masks a more uneven picture beneath the surface. While the property-casualty division delivered its best-ever quarterly operating result at €2.5 billion, the shareholders' core earnings for the quarter slipped to €2.6 billion — a 12.7% decline year-on-year. The divergence suggests that special items or investment income weighed on earnings quality during the period, even as the underlying operations remained solid.

Management, for its part, sees no reason to tinker with the full-year guidance. The operating profit target of €17.4 billion, with a corridor of plus or minus €1 billion, stands untouched. The P&C unit's internal growth of 5.7% on a quarterly business volume of €45.6 billion provides some of the scaffolding for that confidence, as does the shareholders' period result of €6.63 billion for the half.

The sell-side response has been broadly supportive, though not uniformly enthusiastic. Goldman Sachs lifted its price target from €450 to €465, maintaining a buy recommendation. JPMorgan moved its target up from €430 to €460 but kept a neutral stance — a hint that valuation concerns persist even among those willing to nudge their numbers higher. Jefferies remains the outlier, with a €325 target and a hold rating that sits far below the consensus.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Allianz?

The share price tells a story of its own. At €447.60, the stock trades just 1.1% below its 52-week high of €452.80, a level touched only on Tuesday. The seven-day run has added 2.5%, and the year-to-date gain stands at 14%. The distance to the 200-day moving average of €387.80 — roughly 15% — points to a firmly established uptrend, though the relative strength index at 65.2 edges toward territory that some technicians would flag as approaching overbought. The stock's position 4.6% above its 50-day average of €426.58 underscores the momentum of recent weeks, even as the shares gave back a little ground on Thursday.

A separate item surfaced midweek that briefly dragged Allianz's name into the news for reasons unrelated to its operations. Reuters reported on a dispute over allegedly unpaid legal fees between Enel and the law firm High Lonesome, in which an Allianz subsidiary is named as a contractual party. The matter traces back to a derivatives conflict from 2022 and carries no significance for the group's operational trajectory — a legal legacy issue rather than a business concern.

The rating agencies have taken note of the operational stability. Moody's reaffirmed its rating on Tuesday, citing the group's strong market position as a pillar of its outlook, without any change to the assessment itself.

For investors, the picture that emerges is one of operational momentum coexisting with a softer bottom line. The record P&C quarter and the reiterated guidance offer reassurance; the declining core earnings serve as a reminder that not every metric moves in lockstep. The analyst community's split — from Jefferies' cautious €325 to Goldman's €465 — reflects that same tension, leaving the stock's next leg dependent on whether the operational strength eventually translates into cleaner earnings quality.
