Allianz shares closed Friday at €453.00, a whisker from the all-time high of €453.40 set a week earlier, as a steady stream of buybacks, fresh analyst endorsements, and a reaffirmed credit rating combined to keep the stock in the spotlight. The 1.7 percent gain on the day leaves the equity roughly 34 percent above its 12-month low of €337.10.

The Munich-based insurer's repurchase machine shows no signs of slowing. Between August 17 and 21, Allianz scooped up 241,631 of its own shares, lifting the cumulative tally since the program's March 13 launch to 5,391,108. That marks an acceleration from the prior week's 215,946 shares, a cadence that continues to shrink the free float and concentrate earnings per share.

Analyst Targets Climb as Technicals Flash Caution

The rally has drawn fresh support from the sell side. Citigroup lifted its price target on Wednesday from €411.70 to €467.50, while the DZ Bank followed suit the same day with a more aggressive hike from €420 to €486. The upgrades land as the stock tests record territory, suggesting the recent strength carries fundamental backing rather than mere momentum.

Market expectations remain wide, however. Media reports from mid-August put the analyst target range anywhere from €325 to €684, underscoring divergent views on valuation. At roughly 14 times earnings, the shares still look reasonable against sector peers, though technical indicators hint at stretched conditions. The 14-day relative strength index sits at 67.4, and the stock trades 5.9 percent above its 50-day moving average of €427.63 and 17 percent above the 200-day average of €388.29.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Allianz?

Credit Seal and Capital Strength Underpin the Story

Moody's added its voice to the chorus on Monday, reaffirming Allianz's rating and pointing to the group's market position as the anchor for a stable outlook. For a company simultaneously funneling billions into its own equity, an unchanged credit assessment carries weight with both bondholders and shareholders.

The fundamentals behind the bullish calls trace back to a record quarter reported roughly three weeks ago. Since then, the stock has added 3.8 percent. The solvency ratio, a key gauge of insurer capital adequacy, climbed to 225 percent in the first half, up seven percentage points from year-end 2025. That buffer gives Allianz room to both invest and return capital: the current buyback program, authorized for up to €2.5 billion, has already seen €1.4 billion deployed in the first half.

Strategic Moves Beyond the Balance Sheet

Management is also reshaping the business on multiple fronts. Late July brought the exercise of a contractual right to terminate PIMCO's employee participation plan, the so-called M Unit-Plan, with outstanding units to be repurchased for cash. On the growth side, the planned acquisition of HSBC Life Singapore, slated for the first half of 2027 and valued at roughly €2 billion, includes a long-term distribution partnership with HSBC.

A board change adds another layer: Günther Thallinger departs at the end of 2026, with his responsibilities distributed among remaining members, shrinking the executive board from nine to eight. Management has also spoken publicly about broadening its approach to solutions in the core business, a theme explored in a Monday interview published in both German and English.

What's Next

The full-year operating profit target of €17.4 billion, plus or minus €1 billion, reaffirmed in August, remains the central reference point for valuation. The next checkpoint arrives November 12, when third-quarter and nine-month results are due. Until then, the market's focus will be on whether the stock extends its record run or takes a breather after a 16 percent gain since the start of the year and a 6.1 percent advance over the past 30 days.

With a market capitalization of €171.32 billion, Allianz remains one of the heavyweight names in the German equity market — and one that continues to translate earnings strength into shareholder returns while the ratings agencies hold their ground.
