Allianz Analysts Split on Valuation as Buyback and Boardroom Changes Take Shape

Two of Europe's most closely watched research houses have handed down sharply divergent price targets for Allianz, underscoring how differently the market is reading the Munich insurer's prospects. Jefferies lifted its objective for the stock to 420 euros from 325 euros, while keeping a "Hold" rating intact. The DZ Bank, by contrast, raised its fair value to 495 euros on 18 September and reaffirmed a "Buy" recommendation.
The gap between the two calls is wide, and the reasoning behind them differs just as much. Analyst Philip Kett at Jefferies framed his upgrade around technology's double-edged influence on insurance. On one side, he flagged lingering uncertainty over how artificial intelligence will play out over the long term. On the other, he pointed to automation as a concrete opportunity for the group, particularly through the prospect of lower distribution costs per policy written.
Sentiment at DZ Bank rests on more conventional ground. Its analysts cited Allianz's dependable earnings power and disciplined approach to capital allocation, describing the steady underwriting business as a key anchor in a demanding market environment. Berenberg sits even further out on the bullish end, having reiterated a "Buy" rating with a 684-euro target roughly a week ago, a vote that reflects confidence in the group's long-run profitability.
Shares Consolidate Below Peak
The stock was trading at 418.60 euros, up a modest 0.2%, putting it within touching distance of the newly set Jefferies target. That level sits below the 52-week high of 454.50 euros, and the shares have been working through a consolidation phase. At current pricing, Allianz carries a market capitalisation of 157.86 billion euros.
Capital returns remain a central plank of the investment case. In a mandatory disclosure, the company confirmed it repurchased a further 182,616 of its own shares on 21 and 22 September. That brought the cumulative total bought back under the running programme to 6,247,961 shares. The disclosed market value of the most recent transaction came to 79,530,380.11 euros. By shrinking the number of shares in circulation, management continues to lend support to per-share earnings.

AI Risk Exposes Limits of Private Cover
Technology is shaping the agenda on the operational side too. Thomas Lillelund, chief executive of the Allianz Commercial industrial division, said in a Handelsblatt report that novel AI risks cannot be fully insured. Covering systemic large-scale losses would instead require public-private partnerships or higher-level solutions, he argued.
The group also examined the broader economic consequences of technology in its Global Wealth Report, published on 29 September. Now in its 17th edition, the study analyses the wealth and debt position of private households across nearly 60 countries.
Closer to home, Allianz Private Krankenversicherungs-AG rolled out "MeinKrankenhausschutz", a revised inpatient supplementary insurance product offering modular cover through three tiers: "Smart", "Plus" and "Best".
Leadership Roster Set for 2027
Alongside its economic stocktaking, the DAX-listed group is mapping out its personnel line-up for the years ahead. Tomas Kunzmann is slated to join the Allianz SE board on 1 January 2027. Philipp Kroetz takes the helm at Allianz Partners on 1 November 2026, with Laurent Floquet — currently chief operating officer at Allianz Partners — set to succeed him as CEO of Allianz Direct. Every one of these appointments remains subject to regulatory approval.
A change is also underway at Allianz Commercial, where Brian McNamara retired at the end of September. Stephen Morton is due to step into his role as Global Head of Captive Fronting and Captive Solutions on 1 March 2027. The moves amount to a long-lead reshuffling of key posts across the specialty and direct businesses.
Investors will get their next hard data point on 12 November, when Allianz presents detailed figures for the third quarter of 2026.
