Aixtron's Filing Reveals a Goldman Stake That Is Mostly Not Stock

Goldman Sachs' 8.79% Aixtron voting-rights filing is mostly instruments, not stock; Kepler upgraded to Buy, JPMorgan kept Overweight but cut its target.

Aixtron investors reading the latest German voting-rights disclosure need to make one distinction before drawing any conclusions: the bulk of Goldman Sachs' reported position is not held in shares at all. The notification, published today, puts the US bank's aggregate holding at 8.79% — but only 3.56% of that comes from voting rights attached to stock, while 5.23% is made up of instruments. The threshold was crossed on 27 October.

Treating the headline figure as evidence of a bigger direct equity stake would therefore be a misreading. The disclosure describes the composition of a financial position, not a straightforward accumulation of shares, and the larger total does not by itself prove that Goldman has bought a correspondingly larger block of stock.

The filing landed on the same day Aixtron shares climbed 4.5% to EUR 34.42. No causal link between the two can be inferred from the timing alone.

Two Analysts, Two Different Signals

The fundamental backdrop has been shaped by a pair of analyst moves. Kepler Cheuvreux's Ruben Devos upgraded the stock from "Hold" to "Buy" yesterday, leaving his EUR 44 price target untouched. JPMorgan, by contrast, reaffirmed its "Overweight" rating while trimming its target to EUR 52.50 from EUR 54. According to dpa-AFX, analyst Craig McDowell tied that cut to a methodology switch based on estimates for 2028 — not to any loss of conviction. He described the optoelectronics cycle as increasingly sustainable and pointed to an expected recovery in gallium nitride and silicon carbide.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Aixtron?

The two decisions pull in different directions: one improves the recommendation without lifting the target, the other keeps a positive rating while lowering the expected price level. Analyst support, in other words, has not come with uniformly raised expectations.

Where the Orders Are Actually Coming From

The operating case behind the optimism was laid out in Thursday's third-quarter 2026 figures. Order intake jumped 122% year on year to EUR 274.9 million, a surge Aixtron attributed chiefly to equipment for laser applications in communications within AI data centres. Optoelectronics accounted for roughly 68% of equipment orders in the quarter, with power electronics contributing 24% — a clear concentration in the former.

That demand picture also featured in yesterday's trading, when Aixtron rose 2.2% alongside a broader recovery in European chip stocks following the previous week's tech selloff, a rebound Reuters reported. The advance drew on both a friendlier sector mood and company-specific news, with the Kepler upgrade adding to the tailwind.

A Strong Order Book Is Not Yet Revenue

Thursday's release also included a quarterly revenue figure of EUR 183.6 million. For the full year 2026, Aixtron reiterated guidance of EUR 560 million, plus or minus EUR 30 million. On profitability, the company continues to point to a gross margin of around 42% and an EBIT margin of 17–20%.

The order momentum has not translated into a raised annual forecast, which limits how much the intake growth can tell investors about near-term business performance. Order dynamics and revenue expectations are best kept apart: a doubling of orders is not the same as booked sales, and the recovery in the share price rests on a combination of improved sector sentiment, analyst backing and heavy ordering — not on an upgraded company outlook.
