Airbus has locked in its role at the heart of Europe's most ambitious space programme, while simultaneously working through a cluster of operational issues on the commercial aircraft side that have kept its share price under pressure.

At the International Space Summit in Paris, Airbus Defence and Space signed the first contract to develop and build the initial IRIS² satellite tranche. The order comes from Eutelsat, which holds responsibility for the low-Earth-orbit segment of the European constellation within the SpaceRISE consortium. The deal covers at least 66 satellites in the first IRIS² layer, designed to deliver military Ka-band connectivity for European users.

Platform construction and integration will take place in Toulouse, where Airbus already manufactures OneWeb satellites for Eutelsat. Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between Thales and Leonardo, will supply the payloads. The first satellites are slated for delivery in 2029, with a second layer of 264 additional spacecraft to follow from 2030, equipped with platforms from Aerospacelab.

Airbus declined to disclose the value of its share of the contract. Thales Alenia Space put its own payload portion at roughly EUR 500 million within an overall contract volume exceeding EUR 3 billion. IRIS² is planned to encompass 348 satellites in total — 330 in low Earth orbit and 18 at medium altitude — underpinning Europe's push for a sovereign communications infrastructure.

The Paris summit drew backing from President Macron and Commission President von der Leyen, who both called for a stronger European space sector. More than 51 agreements worth approximately EUR 20 billion in investment were signed during the gathering. The European Space Agency's budget for 2026 to 2028 is set to reach a record EUR 22.3 billion, with EUR 35 billion earmarked specifically for security and defence applications in space.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Airbus?

A Multi-Year Backlog Builds in Defence and Space

The IRIS² award slots into a broader shift in which European governments are prioritising homegrown space and communications infrastructure to reduce reliance on non-European suppliers. For Airbus, the entry into IRIS² extends its Defence and Space business over multiple years, with delivery obligations running through at least 2029.

On the commercial aviation side, Airbus delivered 475 aircraft in the first eight months of the year, up from 434 in the same period a year earlier. That keeps the manufacturer broadly on track for its full-year target of 870 deliveries, despite a production snag on the A330. August alone accounted for 57 aircraft.

Among the August orders were eight A350F freighters placed by a customer not yet identified. These are new orders rather than deliveries of the cargo variant — only passenger versions of the A350 family were handed over during the month.

A330 Quality Issue Contained

Airbus had slowed A330 deliveries over the summer after an isolated quality problem emerged on an elevator of the aircraft. Reuters reported that no A330 was delivered at all in June and July, followed by a single unit in August. The company said it inspected the affected aircraft in production and has since resumed deliveries. The setback on one of its key long-haul models had raised questions about the annual guidance, but the latest figures point to stabilisation.

Meanwhile, a resolution is emerging in the Spanish labour dispute. Airbus reached a preliminary agreement with four unions, which will now be put to the workforce for a binding vote following weeks of strikes at Spanish plants. A rejection would create fresh uncertainty over production capacity in Spain, while a positive outcome would ease operational pressure further.

For the delayed A350F freighter, Airbus is holding to its schedule, according to Reuters: the maiden flight is expected at the end of September. The model is seen as a key pillar of future growth in the cargo segment after the programme fell behind schedule.

Airbus at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Market Reaction Muted

The IRIS² news has so far produced no immediate market response. The stock trades at EUR 195.84, roughly 11 percent below its 52-week high of EUR 221.25 reached in January. With an RSI of 40.5, the shares look technically weak and sit just under the 50-day moving average of EUR 202.12. The longer-term trend remains intact, however, with the price still above the 200-day average of EUR 191.11.

In a separate session, the stock was quoted at EUR 197.74, up about 1.2 percent on the day, though it remains down 6.8 percent over the month. The recent operational progress on A330 production and the labour negotiations could offer a starting point for a recovery after the shares came under pressure.

Taken together, the picture shows Airbus working through several open fronts at once: the A330 production issue, the Spanish wage conflict and preparations for the A350F's first flight. For investors, the decisive question is whether the delivery momentum of recent months carries through to year-end and whether the 870-aircraft target genuinely remains within reach. The IRIS² contract, by contrast, is likely to matter less for near-term price moves than for cementing Airbus's long-term position in the European defence and space sector — a position that political backing from Paris and Brussels, alongside planned increases in European space budgets, should continue to reinforce in the years ahead.
