Acid Spill at Paderborn Logistics Site Sends Ten Workers to Hospital

A routine loading shift at a logistics company on Pamploner Straße in Paderborn turned into a major hazardous-materials response on 14 September 2026, when a corrosive cleaning agent escaped from its container and prompted a large-scale deployment of emergency crews.
Alarm Raised Shortly After 6 A.M.
Firefighters were called to the site at around 6:00 in the morning after a hazardous substance leaked from a 60-litre drum. According to responders, the material was a cleaning product combining nitric acid and phosphoric acid.
What caused the container to fail was still unclear when the first assessments were carried out. Because that acid blend is severely caustic and can release vapours harmful to health on contact with ambient air alone, authorities moved quickly to put extensive safety measures in place.

Around 100 Responders on Scene at the Peak
The scale of the potential danger led incident commanders to call in a substantial contingent of personnel. At its height, roughly 100 emergency workers were on site to cordon off the hazard zone and begin decontamination. Early reports on the day of the incident had initially put the number of responders arriving immediately after the morning alert at about 60.
Sixteen people were affected by the release in total. Following an initial assessment by paramedics, ten of them were taken to nearby hospitals suffering from respiratory irritation.
Other accounts placed the number of those hospitalised at nine, treated specifically at clinics in Paderborn. Medical care centred largely on treating irritation of the mucous membranes and airways caused by the acid fumes.
Substance Secured by Midday
By noon the fire service was able to report that the escaping material had been successfully contained, removing the immediate threat of further spread. Once containment was complete, about 30 responders stayed behind to handle the necessary clean-up work across the logistics centre's grounds.
