Abivax is staffing up for the commercial phase of its lead candidate, naming two senior executives in September 2026 as the company positions itself for a US regulatory filing on Obefazimod before the year is out. The ulcerative colitis treatment remains on track for a New Drug Application submission by the end of 2026, a timeline management has left untouched even as the balance sheet absorbs the heavy costs of late-stage development.

The leadership changes carry a clear operational logic. Tim Kelly steps in as Chief Technical Officer, taking charge of CMC, quality assurance, IT and the build-out of the commercial supply chain. On the medical side, Chris Rabbat is set to succeed Fabio Cataldi as Chief Medical Officer during the fourth quarter of 2026. Together the appointments signal a company shifting its center of gravity from clinical trials toward the machinery of launch.

Funding that transition is a cash runway that stretches into the fourth quarter of 2029 — an unusually long planning horizon for a biotech at this stage. A capital raise completed in early July delivered net proceeds of EUR 767.1 million, a transaction that did much of the heavy lifting in extending the company's financial reach. The cushion gives management room to finish its studies and work through regulatory requirements without returning to the market.

That breathing space matters given how quickly the spending is accelerating. Operating cash burn climbed 54 percent in the first half of 2026, according to interim results published more than a month ago. The second quarter alone produced EUR 1.2 million in revenue against a net loss of EUR 117.43 million — a gap that lays bare the cost of preparing a drug for market.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Abivax?

Analysts Look Past the Selloff

Investors have yet to be persuaded by the long runway. Abivax shares closed Friday at EUR 82.00, down 32 percent since the start of the year and 41 percent below their 52-week high. The retreat reflects the familiar hesitation that sets in ahead of regulatory milestones, with market participants weighing approval risk while late-stage expenses press on the income statement.

Sell-side institutions, by contrast, are striking a more constructive tone. Barclays reaffirmed its Overweight rating on Tuesday with a price target of $148, while Truist Financial trimmed its target to $151 from $155 the same day but kept its Buy recommendation. Both imply fair value well above where the stock currently trades.

The valuation backdrop is equally striking. Abivax carries a price-to-book ratio of 19.5, above the average for French biotech peers — a multiple that prices in considerable optimism about what Obefazimod could become.

The 2029 Profitability Question

Where that optimism leads is a matter of arithmetic. Cautious analyst estimates compiled before the most recent quarterly figures point to roughly EUR 241.2 million in revenue for fiscal 2029, alongside a net profit of about EUR 15.9 million. Hitting those marks depends entirely on approval and subsequent market penetration.

Should Obefazimod clear regulators and gain commercial traction, Abivax could complete the transition to sustained profitability. Until then, the company's profile remains defined by the twin risks of clinical execution and regulatory outcome — and by whether it can file in the US on schedule. A delay would push capital consumption higher and complicate the market positioning the company is now staffing up to secure.
