Aachen's New Tech Hub Opens Its Doors After 486-Day Construction Sprint

The countdown clock on Campus Melaten has finally run out. After 486 days of construction that began with a ceremonial groundbreaking in August 2024, the AGIT Center for Advanced Technology — better known by its acronym ACAT — welcomed its first occupants in December 2025, right on schedule.
The numbers tell the story of the project's scale. The new building spans roughly 5,800 square metres of gross floor area and can accommodate around 300 workstations. When combined with the neighbouring Centre for Bio-Medical Engineering (ZBMT), the campus now forms a connected complex totalling approximately 11,900 square metres.
A deliberate mix of startups and established players
What sets ACAT apart from conventional office developments is its tenant strategy. The management has consciously avoided filling the building with a single type of company. Instead, the space is designed to host a blend of early-stage startups, growing scale-ups, and seasoned technology firms — a mix intended to spark cross-pollination and accelerate knowledge transfer within the building's walls.
That approach appears to be working. One tenant already settled in is InCirt, a company developing data-converter solutions for mmWave-5G and 6G applications. Its presence signals the kind of high-tech focus the centre aims to cultivate. While most of the floor space has been leased, the management team says capacity remains for other technology-oriented businesses looking to establish themselves at this innovation hub.
Sustainability credentials baked into the design
The building's environmental ambitions are equally central to its identity. ACAT is pursuing a Gold certification from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), a recognition that reflects the emphasis placed on ecological standards throughout the design and construction phases.
Workplace quality got equal billing. Tenants have access to seven modern meeting rooms, plus shared amenities including a rooftop terrace and an in-house bistro. These communal spaces are deliberately positioned as gathering points where employees from different companies can interact informally — a soft infrastructure investment aimed at fostering serendipitous encounters.
A new home base for AGIT itself
The project carries symbolic weight beyond its commercial function. During the topping-out ceremony in July 2025, which featured panel discussions with representatives from politics and academia, officials underscored the building's role in the region's structural transformation. The ACAT has also become the new corporate headquarters for AGIT itself, anchoring the economic development agency squarely within the RWTH Aachen research network.
That proximity to university facilities is no accident. Campus Melaten's chief advantage lies in the short distance between scientific discovery and market-ready application. For companies working at the frontier of technology, being steps away from academic laboratories shortens development cycles and opens direct lines to fresh talent.
The broader vision extends well beyond this single structure. Expanding office and laboratory space on Campus Melaten forms part of a long-term strategy to position Aachen as a leading European hub for cutting-edge technology. By combining ergonomic work environments with rigorous sustainability standards, the city aims to attract both skilled professionals and forward-looking enterprises.
With ACAT now fully operational, the campus has gained what planners describe as a critical mass of innovation capacity — one more piece in the puzzle of connecting scientific research with commercial reality in the Aachen region.
