The calm at the surface of the VanEck Morningstar Developed Markets Dividend Leaders UCITS ETF masks a storm brewing inside one of its largest holdings. On Thursday, the fund traded at €55.33, up 0.09 percent on the day and just 0.6 percent shy of its 52-week high of €55.66, set on August 4. That equanimity is no accident — it is the product of a portfolio engineered to absorb exactly the kind of shock that Hapag-Lloyd delivered this week.

The Hamburg-based shipping giant reported a second-quarter net profit of $83 million, down sharply from $306 million in the same period last year. The culprit: the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which piled roughly $600 million in extra costs onto the company's books through service reroutings, higher bunker fuel prices, and rising insurance and warehousing expenses. Yet even with that drag, the operational picture held up — group EBITDA ticked up to $829 million (€712 million) from $820 million a year earlier, helped by strong Asian exports and firmer US demand, according to CEO Rolf Habben Jansen.

The contrast between the earnings hit and the fund's muted reaction illustrates the core logic of a diversified dividend strategy. Hapag-Lloyd is one of 116 holdings in the portfolio, and its pain is diluted across a broad base of income-paying names. The fund's sector tilt — financials at 42.4 percent and energy at 11.5 percent — leans heavily toward the industries that traditionally generate the fattest payouts, and that weighting has paid off handsomely this year. The ETF is up 15 percent since January and 25 percent over the trailing twelve months, having climbed steadily from a September 2025 trough of €43.50.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying VanEck Morningstar Developed Markets Dividend Leaders UCITS ETF?

At the top of the portfolio, the composition is shifting. Exxon Mobil has overtaken longtime leader Verizon Communications with a 5.60 percent weight, pushing the telecom giant to 4.69 percent. TotalEnergies follows at 3.69 percent, Nestlé at 3.58 percent, and Pfizer at 3.47 percent. The reshuffle reflects a rebalancing of the underlying Morningstar Developed Markets Large Cap Dividend Leaders Screened Select Index toward energy names, though the top ten positions still account for roughly 35 percent of assets, keeping telecom, consumer staples, and pharma firmly in the mix.

Hapag-Lloyd, for its part, is holding to the upgraded full-year guidance it issued earlier. Management still expects EBITDA of $2.7 billion to $3.7 billion for 2026, with EBIT of $0.1 billion to $1.1 billion. Volumes rose to 3.5 million TEU, and average freight rates climbed 9 percent to $1,475 per TEU. The caution flag remains planted, however — the company warns of "considerable uncertainty" around volatile rates and ongoing conflicts.

For income-focused investors, the fund's appeal rests on more than just price appreciation. It pays quarterly distributions, and the total return over the past twelve months stands at 31.04 percent with dividends reinvested. Since its May 2016 launch in the Netherlands, the fund has delivered an average annual return of 14.30 percent. With roughly €9.1 billion in net assets and a total expense ratio of 0.38 percent, it is the only product tracking this specific Morningstar index — a niche that has proven resilient even as geopolitical shocks ripple through individual holdings.
