Two votes of confidence landed on 2G Energy this week — and neither of them answers the question that actually matters for the share price. On Monday, media reports revealed that SHH Spring Hunter Holdings GmbH, a company closely tied to supervisory board member Lukas Lenz, had picked up stock in the cogeneration specialist. The same day brought a research upgrade from SMC Research, which lifted its rating from "Buy" to "Strong Buy" and raised its price target to 82.00 EUR from 80.00 EUR, citing growth prospects and demand for data-centre solutions.

Shares responded, though the two source reports put the pre-market gain at different levels — 2.0% in one account and 3.9% in another. Either way, the moves in the stock are a sideshow next to the operating numbers.

What the insider purchases do and don't prove

The directors' dealings disclosure for the SHH purchase was published on Monday, though the transaction itself was executed on Friday. It wasn't the only buying: finance chief Friedrich Pehle also added to his holding through a joint account.

Purchases like these carry weight because they put real money behind a view rather than mere optimistic commentary. Their limits are just as clear. They demonstrate that insiders are confident about the future — they say nothing about whether that future earnings power has already materialised. Treat them as a supporting signal, not a substitute for the P&L.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying 2G Energy?

SMC's upgrade belongs in the same category. The growth argument, particularly around demand from data centres, is a case for the longer-term opportunity. It is a different claim from proof of near-term profitability. An attractive demand outlook can justify a more generous valuation approach without softening the current earnings hurdle.

The benchmark is still the operating business

The half-year report for 2026, published on 15 October, put revenue at 136.0 Mio. EUR. EBIT came in at 0.8 Mio. EUR, a margin of just 0.6%.

Against that, the board's confirmed full-year guidance — reaffirmed a little over a week ago — targets revenue of 440–490 Mio. EUR and an EBIT margin of 9.5–10.5% for 2026. The gap between the two is the whole story. Hitting the target requires a second-half performance far more profitable than anything delivered in the first six months. Guidance is a company expectation, not a result already banked, and confirming it does not mean the catch-up work has been done.

Two analysts, two different yardsticks

The counterweight came from Parmantier & Cie., which reiterated its "Sell" rating on 15 October with a price target of 39.00 EUR. The research house pointed to the weak first-half margin and the heavy earnings demands loaded into the second half. According to media reports, that call was one trigger for the sharp share-price slide that followed the half-year report.

2G Energy at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Read side by side, the two analyst positions are not simply competing moods. SMC is emphasising growth prospects; Parmantier is focused on earnings delivery. They are applying different valuation yardsticks, and the sceptical one targets precisely the metric that insider purchases cannot improve.

That is the crux. The renewed optimism deserves attention, but not an unconditional benefit of the doubt. Insider buying strengthens the confidence case. The decisive evidence still has to come from operations — and until the second-half numbers show the margin gap closing, the burden of proof rests with the company.
