Ripple is implementing a fundamental strategic shift in how it supports the XRP Ledger (XRPL). Moving away from its previous centralized grant system, the company will adopt a decentralized, community-driven funding model starting in 2026. This structural overhaul is designed to foster greater long-term independence for the ecosystem and broaden its growth foundation, even as the XRP token faces current price pressure.

Network Activity Defies Bearish Sentiment

Despite a challenging market environment, the XRP Ledger is showing signs of underlying utility. Recent data indicates a sharp increase in payment volume on the network, reaching levels commonly seen before the broader market correction. This surge suggests tangible use beyond pure price speculation. Currently, the XRP price is trading at $1.36, having declined approximately 29% on a monthly basis.

Decentralizing the Development Pipeline

Since 2017, Ripple has invested over $550 million in initiatives surrounding the XRPL. The new strategy aims to significantly reduce developers' dependency on Ripple as the primary funding source. The core of this change is the planned introduction of a hybrid Decentralized Autonomous Organization, dubbed the "XAO DAO." This entity will govern the distribution of micro-grants through community voting mechanisms. To complement this, regional hubs will be established to provide targeted, on-the-ground support for developers in areas like Asia.

Strengthening Institutional and Technical Foundations

Alongside the funding revamp, Ripple is bolstering the technical infrastructure for institutional applications. A newly proposed "FinTech Builder Program" will target startups focused on developing solutions for stablecoins and tokenized credit. On the protocol level, a key technical proposal, XLS-66, stands out. It seeks to establish a native lending protocol directly on the ledger, which could create new liquidity and yield opportunities within a defined risk framework.

Regulatory Landscape and Technical Milestones

The strategic pivot occurs as retail investor interest has notably cooled, according to recent derivatives data. Consequently, significant attention is focused on the political and regulatory landscape. An internal deadline at the White House on March 1st is linked to negotiations concerning the "CLARITY Act." Market observers hope this legislative effort will finally provide legal clarity for digital assets in the United States.

From a technical standpoint, a reset of the developer network (Devnet) is scheduled for March 3, 2026, to address a critical software bug; the main network will remain unaffected. The ultimate success of the new decentralized strategy will hinge on two factors: the community's adoption of the planned DAO structures and favorable regulatory developments in Washington.
