This Saturday marks a pivotal moment for the digital asset XRP, as the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) faces a final deadline to rule on several spot ETF applications. Despite Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse heralding this as a turning point for institutional adoption, the token's price action tells a conflicting story, largely ignoring recent fundamental developments.

Price Performance Lags Behind Regulatory Progress

The market has failed to reflect significant regulatory clarity achieved in recent weeks. In mid-March, both the SEC and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) jointly classified XRP as a digital commodity, providing the asset with its clearest legal standing to date. Nevertheless, XRP currently trades around $1.36, representing a decline of more than 27% since the start of the year.

This investor caution persists despite Ripple's ongoing ecosystem expansion. The company is enhancing its infrastructure through AI-powered network security tests, the launch of a new stablecoin called RLUSD, and an Automated Market Maker backed by $340 million in capital. However, a structural disconnect exists: holders of the XRP token do not directly benefit from revenue generated by these network services. Fees primarily flow to validators and liquidity providers, even as Ripple's private valuation has climbed to $50 billion.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XRP?

Billions in Institutional Capital Await ETF Green Light

The immediate focus is on the SEC's impending decision regarding spot ETFs proposed by major firms including Grayscale, Bitwise, and Franklin Templeton. Analysts from Bloomberg estimate a 95% probability of approval. The potential influx of capital is substantial; current investments in U.S. spot ETFs total $1.44 billion, with retail investors accounting for 84% of that figure. Formal authorization is projected to unlock up to $8 billion in new institutional money. Early positioning by major financial institutions is already evident, with Goldman Sachs reportedly holding an ETF position worth $154 million.

Analysts Temper Long-Term Forecasts Amid Broader Uncertainty

The overall market sentiment, indicated by a Crypto Fear & Greed Index reading of 29, remains in "fear" territory. This pessimistic backdrop has prompted analysts to revise their projections. Standard Chartered recently slashed its 2026 price target for XRP from $8.00 to $2.80, citing a gap between its market capitalization and tangible on-chain activity. More optimistic scenarios, such as a rise to $10.00, are now tied to specific political developments. Analysts suggest this would require legislative action, notably the passage of the U.S. "CLARITY Act," which would simplify the process for banks to hold digital assets.
